Holotype and a part of paratypes are deposited in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, the other paratype are deposited in the collection of the author. The new species is named in honour of my Georgian colleague Mr. Irakli Djavelidze, who collected these specimens and offered them to me for study. In the year of 1989 I collected a specimen of Carabus (Lipaster) stjernvalli Manncrheim, 1830 in the Central Caucasus (Lebarde, Egrisskiy mountain range), which was different in size, shape, structure of elytra and colour from the well-known subspecies C. (L.) stjernvalli humboldti Faidermann, 1835 that occur in the West Caucasus. In the next year a large series of specimens from the same locality was collected which proved that this is a new subspecies of C. (L.) stjernvalli. Carabus (Lipaster) stjernvalli gvalijai ssp.n. The new subspecies differs from the nominate subspecies and ssp. humboldti in the following respects: 1) body larger, robuster; 2) subpolishcd or mat, olive-green coloured; 3) elytra smooth, finely scratched; 4) apex of the aedeagus longer and slighter (Figs 3-4). - Full length of body: â 28-32 mm. 930-36 mm. Head thick, eyes moderately prominent, frontal furrows deep, frons and vertex strongly, neck finely wrinkled.
