Two new Carabus species from the Caucasus (Coleoptera: Carabidae) By I. Retezár (Received September 18, 1990) Two new Carabus from the Caucasus (Coleoptera: Carabidae). - A new species: Carabus (Archiplectes) djavelidzei sp. nov. from the Central Caucasus and a new subspecies: Carabus (Lipaster) stjernvalli gvalijai subsp. nov. from the Lesser Caucasus are described. In the year of 1990 I. Djavelidze collected a series of Carabus in the Lesser Caucasus (Adzharo-Imeretinskiy mountain range) and offered them to me for study. I was surprised when I found among this material a small series of specimens belong to the subgenus Archiplectes, the occurrence of which was unknown from this region up to the present. These specimens proved to be new for Archiplectes belong to the "komarowi-group" (sensu Gottwald, 1985) and its locality there is about 80 km to south from the distribution range of the two species (protensus Schaum, 1864 and protensoides Novotny et Vorisek, 1988) standing morphologically close to each other. Carabus (Archiplectes) djavelidzei sp.n. The new species differs from the related two Archiplectes species protensus Schaum and protensoides Novotny et Vorisek in that: 1) size of body smaller, elytra with stronger costate primary and secondary intervals; 2) pronotum sinuated straight towards base, not cordate; 3) unicoloured, dark violet-bluish; 4) apex of aedeagus more strongly curved (Figs 1-2). - Full length of body: <J 30-34 mm, 932-36 mm. Head normal, eyes moderately prominent, frontal furrows deep, irons and vertex strongly, neck slighter wrinkled. Antenna moderately long, in ó*ó* scarely extending to the first third of elytra. Pronotum broader than long, broadest much before the middle, sinuated straight towards base, not cordate. Lateral margins wide, hind angles a little bit protruding backwards and rounded. Surface less convex, basal depressions deep elongate, finely and uniformly wrinkled all over. Elytra elongate oval, broadest behind middle, margin faintly incurved near apex. Primary and secondary intervals strongly costale, the primaries a little bit more stronghly than the secondaries and interrupted by foveae. Secondaries intact. The costac of the tertiary intervals very slight or disappear. Between costae rather regular rows of foveae are present. Upper surface of body unicoloured, subpolished, dark violet- bluish. Lower surface of body, palps, antenna and legs black.
