The " nitidulus-group" is apparently homogenous and easily separable from the other groups, principally on the base of the following external features: protibia strongly emarginate near the apex on its outer margin, infraocular ridge present, upper surface of the anterior part of the body rather shining, size small: 2-2.5 mm. Identification key to species: 1 (4) Upper surface of head with scattered, distinct punctures. Temple a little longer than diameter of compound eye. Last segments of antennae transverse, almost twice broader than long. Abdomen with very fine microreticulation among a few small but distinct punctures. Black, elytra yellowish-brown, palpi and legs yellow. 2 (3) Prothorax covered with very coarse elongate punctures confluent laterally to form longitudinal striae. Median sulcus narrower but no strikingly deeper than lateral ones. Upper surface of elytra densely striate and punctured, o* temple longer than 2 , slightly dilated backwards to broadly rounded posterior angle, d 1 7th sternite of abdomen emarginated on the middle of the posterior margin as in Fig. 1. 2 7th sternite of abdomen produced in the middle of posterior margin and rounded. Aedoeagus as in Figs 4-5. , , nitidulus (Gravenhorst, 1802) 3 (2) Prothorax covered with coarse but distinct punctures, being elongate laterally but never confluent. Median sulcus narrow and deep, deeper than the lateral ones. Upper surface of elytra similar to that of prothorax, covered big but distinct punctures, puncturation denser at sides than in the middle, and there partly elongate but not confluent. Body slender, shining, ó* 1 temple as long as diameter of compound eye, nearly straight to the widely rounded posterior angle. 2 mm. petzi (Bernhauer, 1914) 4 (1) Upper surface of head without any visible puncturation. Last segments of antennae more transverse and at least twice broader than long. 5 (6) Upper surface of head and abdomen smooth and shiny, covered with very fine microsculpture composed of small, scattered punctures visible only under high magnification. Head subquadrate, temple as long as diameter of compound eye, straight and nearly parallel, posterior angles obtuse, a little narrower than thorax. Prothorax transverse, upper surface with only traces of sulci and strewn with hardly visible, scattered punctures. Elytra longer than prothorax, and covered with the same sculpture. Blackish-brown, elytra yellowish-brown, palpi and legs yellow. 2 mm. herculis (Bernhauer, 1936) 6 (5) Upper surface of head, prothorax and elytra covered with very characteristic reticulation, composed of fine," elongate, shining lines. (This combination of features is unique among European species).Head subquadrate, temple at least twice longer than diameter of compound eye.
