Black, elytra pitchy-black or dark reddish-brown, legs yellow except brownish, infuscated femora, palpi yellow except penultimate brownish segments. Abdomen covered with very fine microreticulation which is denser laterally than the disc, rather shining, o 5 ' temples 2.5 times longer than diameter of compound eyes. 6th sternite of abdomen before the apical margin with 2 oblique tubercles, between them surface depressed, 7th broadly and moderately deeply emarginated, on the posterior margin in the middle with 2 scarcely prominent, hardly visible, small tubercles, as in Fig. 2. 2 temple only twice longer than diameter of compound eye. 7th sternite of abdomen triangularly produced in the middle of the posterior margin, as in Fig. 2. <? aedoeagus as in Figs 6-9. 2-2.2 mm. (- bisulcatus Petri, 1891) politus (Erichson, 1859) 1 2 3 Figs 1-3: Apex of male's abdomen - ventral view. - 1. Anotylus nitidulus Gravenhorst 2. A. politus Erichson - 3. A. fairmairei Pandellé REMARKS 1. Anotylus nitidus (Gravenhorst, 1802) - Very common and widely distributed in the Carpathian Basin, also Hungary. HORION (1963) published it from the whole of the Palearctic Region, East Indies, Malay Archipelago, North America, Egypt and Syria. A great deal of collecting data and observations suggest that the species is hygrophilous, stercorlcolous, phyto- and zoodetriticolous and cadavericolous. According to HAMMOND (1968) it is an adventive species, exhibiting synanthropic tendencies . 2. Anotylus petzi (Bernhauer, 1914) - The species was described from Upper Austria: Grimburg, based only on female specimen. I examined the type of the Bernhauer's Collection (deposited in the Field Museum of Natural History). Labels: 1: "Grünburg Austria sud Petz" 2: "Ox. politus Er. ? 1886" 3: "Petzi Brh. Typus" Subsequently, ROUBAL (1935) recorded it from South Slovakia: Sahy ( Ipolyság); this locality is in the Carpathian Basin. ROUBAL had commented that he was sure in his determination, but the description did not entirely fit to his specimen and he found some specimens of A. nitidulus with similar elytral sculpture as that of A. petzi . I have also found some specimens of A. nitidulus , from various localities of Hungary, wich showed highly similar sculpture on elytra as that of A. petzi and also of A. nitidulus luridipennis Luze. The clarification of this problem would be highly desirable for a better understanding of our fauna and the taxonomy of this closely related species. However, it will be possible only after further collectings of larger series of male specimens. 3. Anotylus herculis (Bernhauer, 1936) - I have examined, without dissecting, the type specimen of the Bernhauer's Collection (deposited in the Field Museum of Natural History). Labels: 1: "Herkulesbad Hu. m. ly.v. Haupt." 2: "politus Er" 3: "herculis Brnh. Typus unie. Oxytelus." The description was based only on one male specimen, collected by lieutenant von Haupt in South Hungary: Herkulesbad (= Herkules fürdő). Since the description I am not aware of any subsequent specimens. Bionomics unknown. 4. Anotylus politus (Erichson, 1859) - The species was described by ERICHSON (1839) from Austria (Without closer locality data) . Subsequent publications, GANGLBAUER (1895), REITTER (1909),
