FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XLVI. 1 1985 p. 171-173 Canarilabis gen. n. for Forficula maxima Brullé, 1838 (Dermaptera: Carcinophoridae) By H. STEINMANN (Received July 15, 1984) Abstract: A new genus Canarilabis for the Forficula (Forficesila) maxima Brullé, 1838 is described and a key to the African and Canarian Carcinophoridae genera is given. The comparative morphological survey of the genital apparatus of Carcinophorids led to the conclusion that the taxonomic features regularly applied and evaluated are highly appropriate for superspecific classification. The taxon Forficula maxima described by BRULLÉ is an endemic species of the Canary Islands. Its eidonomic features are easily identified therefore a through examination of its genital armature seemed to be needless. A revision of the species of the family in question proved that on the basis of the genitalia conspicuous differences are to be established, consequently, an erection of a new genus for Forficula maxima is Justified. Canarilabis gen. n. Very large species, with fully developed, comparatively straight forceps; general colour dark brownish black; ultimate tergite broad, tumid; smooth; tegmina and wings absent. Male forceps very long, strongly trigonal basally and medially, cylindrical and a little curved apically. Male genitalia characteristic, central parameral plate V-shaped, very large, elongate, but narrow, median incision of anterior margin of the paramere very deep; virga absent; external paramere 3-4 times as long as broad, with conspicuous outer, cloak-like flange, as in Fig. 4.
