S. Mahunka szerk.: Folia Entomologica Hungarica 46/1. (Budapest, 1985)

Antennae multisegmented, 27-jointed; first joint long, but shorter than distance between antennái bases; second quadrate, third joint longer than fourth, rest shorter, cylindrical. Pronotum slightly longer than broad; lateral margins more or less parallel-sided or a little expanded posteriorly; median longitudinal furrow present; all angles rounded. Tegmina and wings entirely absent.Mesonotum transverse, metanotum normal. Abdomen large, a little expanded to last tergite. Abdominal tergites with finely, sometimes weakly marked punctures. Ultimate tergite broad, large, posterior margin trisinuate. Penultimate sternite broad, truncate on posterior margin medially. Forceps characteristic, very long, strongly trigonal basally, and medially; straight, and cylindrical and curved apically. Inner margin with numerous smaller or larger teeth. Genitalia specific; central parameral plate very long, with a very deep median incision at anterior margin; genital lobes without virgae; external paramere characteristic, broad, strongly sclerotized, and with a conspicuous cloak-like outer marginal flange, as in Fig. 4. Figs 1-5. Male genital armature of 1 = Euborellla annulipes (Lucas, 1847), 2 = Gonolabis sp., 3 = Anisolabis maritima (Bonelli, 1832), 4 = Canarilabis maxima (Brullé, 1838), and 5 = Aborolabis mauritanica (Lucas, 1846) (Original) Female very similar to male, but general colour lighter, generally reddish brown; pronotum quadrate, more or less as broad as long; forceps slenderer, tapering, contiguous; symmetrical, more or less straight, trigonal basally and cylindrical apically. Length of body with forceps: male: 26-28 mm, female: 23-27 mm. Distribution: Canary Islands: the species is endemic but widely distributed in the islands. 1 (2) Each distal lobe of the male genitalia with the end of the lobe sclerotized and denticulated (Fig. 1), and often with a lateral denticulated pad in addition; if absent then tegmina and wings fully developed. Paramere of male genitalia always broad and short. Usually smaller and more slender species, antennae with more moniliform joints 2 (1) Each distal lobe of the male genitalia without such a sclerotized and denticulated end, and without a lateral denticulated pad; tegmina and wings always completely absent in African and Canarian species. 3 (4) Male abdomen gradually widened distally; forceps stout, arcuate and symmetrical, or asymmetrical, branches widely separated; antennái joints more slender, distal joints almost moniliform. External paramere of male genitalia more or less twice as long as broad (Fig. 2) Gonolabis Burr, 1900 Key to African and Canarian Carcinophorid genera Euborellia Burr, 1909
