S. Mahunka szerk.: Folia Entomologica Hungarica 33/2. (Budapest, 1980)

The strongly reticulated intervals of elytra separate the new species from its nearest relatives: A . teter Roth and A . rotschildi Schmidt, since in the latter the hind basitarsi are distinctly longer than the following two joints together, etc. Aphodius (Pleurophorus) levis Schmidt ab. leviplanus ab. n. Tn A. levis Schmidt the intervals of elytra are weakly, but distinctly convex, in numerous specimens almost or entirely flat: ab. leviplanus ab. n. yhodius (Ammoecius) orycis sp. n. Black, shiny, legs reddish brown. Clypeus broadly emarginated, both sides of emarglnation with a sharp tooth, genae rounded, but distinctly produced behind eyes. Frontal suture absent or indistinct, without tubercle, transverse clypeal carina long, strongly curved, but not reaching eyes. Surface between apical margin and clypeal carina smooth, hind part of head laterally »ather densely, in the middle more sparsely covered with rather big punctures . Pronotum much broader than long, broadest before hind angles, sides in anterior half nearly straight, distinctly converging to apex, in posterior half convex curved. Anterior angles not produced, hind angles very broadly rounded. Sides and basis bordered, apical margin without border. Surface sparsely punctate, punctures about as big as on head. Scutellum triangular. Elytra strongly convex, lightly dilated towards apex. Striae very fine, simply punctate, punctures scarcely notching sides of flat, very sparsely punctated intervals. Anterior tibiae with three strong teeth, behind basal tooth serrate. Transversal carinae of hind tibiae strong, bristles on apex of equal length, strong. Hind basitarsi shorter than upper thorn of hind tibiae and about as long as following three joints together. Length: 3.5-5 mm. - Examined material 172 specimens. Types: Holotype and 160 paratypes: S. Afr. Namaq. coast, Gemsbok vlakte, 30°30S-l7°29'E, 28. 10.1977, E-Y Nr. 1400, leg. Endrődy-Younga. 11 paratypes: same collecting data but collected on 3.9.1977, E-Y Nr. 1376. Closely related to A . brevitarsis Péringuey, but in this species the genae are not produced, both sides of clypeal emargination angulately rounded, elytral striae deep, intervals convex, etc. Aphodius (Ammoecius) orycoides sp. n. Black shiny, surface bald, strongly convex. Clypeus broadly emarginated, both sides of emargination sharply toothed, genae obtuse, lightly produced behind eyes. Transversal carina behind apical margin of clypeus long, reaching almost eyes. Frontal suture distinct, without tubercle. Pronotum much broader than long, sides strongly curved, anterior angles obtuse, not produced, hind angles broadly rounded. Basis bordered. Punctation on sides somewhat denser, than on disc, punctures almost equal. Elytral striae impressed, on apex somewhat deeper, with rather strong, the sides of intervals with notching punctures. Intervals on disc lightly, on apex strongly convex, sparsely and very finely punctate. Anterior tibiae tridentate, behind basal tooth serrate. Transversal carinae of hind tibiae strong, apical bristles short, dense, equal. Hind basitarsi shorter than upper thorn of hind tibiae and longer than following three joints together. Length: 4.5-5.5 mm. - Examined material 3 specimens. Types: Holotype and 2 paratypes: S. Afr., Namaq. coast, Gemsbok vlakte frm., 30°30'S17°29'E, 28.10.1977, E-Y Nr. 1400, at light, leg. Endrődy-Younga. The new species is similar to A . orycis sp. n., but the striae of elytra in the latter are very fine, intervals flat, only on apex lightly convex. A. brevitarsis Péringuey is also similar, but in this species the apex of clypeus is at both sides of emargination angulately rounded, not toothed, puncutres of pronotum unequal, etc.
