FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK XLI (XXXIII). 1. 1980 p. 33-36 Oribatid species from some Egyptian habitats (Acari: Oribatida) By B. M. BAYOUMI (Received December 5, 1979) Abstract: A list comprising 14 species of Oribatid mites, extracted from different Egyptian habitats, is given; 6 are new to Egypt, one (Zygoribatula niliaca sp. n. ) is new to science. It is now believed that oribatid mites play an important role in the process of soil industry (DRIFT, 1951; MAC FAD YEN, 1952; BALOGH, 1958; ENGELMANN, 1961 and others). In order to gain accurate information about their activities in soil environment, the accumulation of taxonomic data and species distribution of tnia group of mites is essential to ecologists. Taxonomic studies of the oribatids in Egypt had long been neglected. The present attempt is a contribution to the knowledge of the Egyptian oribatid fauna. Litter and soil samples were collected by the author and I. BAKR from various habitats. The extraction of mites has been accomplished by means of-a TULLGREN-funnel. Animals were cleared in lactic acid, and examined in open temporary preparations as recommended by GRANDJEAN (1949). List of localities Loc. I: Alexandria: Botanical Garden of Faculty of Science, under Eucalyptus trees, 28. III. 1979. Loc. II: Alexandria: Ibid., litter of Ficus trees, 28. III. 1979. Loc. Ill: Alexandria: Ibid., soil inside Green house, 28. III. 1979. Loc. IV: King Maryut: Reclamated soil under Citrus trees, 25. V. 1979. Loc. V: Qalyubia Governorate: Tukh, soil under orange trees, 11. VI. 1979. Loc. VI: Sharqia Governorate: Faqus, farmyard manure, 13. VI. 1979. Loc.VII: Tanta city: soil under apple orchard, 25. V. 1979. Leg. I. Bakr. Systematic list of identified species The following list is arranged according to the system proposed by BALOGH (1972). The name of the 3pecies is followed by the locality number, whereas the number of individuals in the sample is given between brackets. The known distribution of each species is also reported. Species new to Egyptian fauna are marked with an asterisk.
