Northern woody savanna zone . The Gambaga scarp is the northernmost range in the country. Its relatively high ground dominates the endless flat savanna below. The sudan-type open grassland turns again into woody savanna, covering the slopes of the scarp and extending southwards over the Gambaga plateau. The light collections were made in front of the resthouse on the edge of the plateau. The grovy savanna with scattered big rocks approaches the resthouse from behind. The thick and short grass, mixed with a variety of Dicotyledons was a good place for netting, and the low trees for beating. On the millet fields, the weeds collected in small heaps sheltered a rich ground fauna. The collections of coprophagous insects (singled and sifted) were among the best so far taken in Ghana, doubtless due to the presence of wild game in the area . 31. Navrongo: Upper region N. 10.53, W. 1.05, Alt.: 665 ft (202 m) . Northern woody savanna zone . From the west, the typical woody savanna extends roughly to Navrongo ,with the vegetation becoming more open astwards. Only one collection has been made on the irrigated trial fields of the FAO. 32. New Longoro: Brong-Ahafo region N. 8.05, W. 2.01, Alt.: 350 ft (107 m) . Northern woody savanna zone. Many collections have been made on the savanna, mostly by netting during the rainy seasons. In 1966 a shea butter tree (Butyrospermum parkii) was selected, with its bark burned black by savanna fires. The tree was cut in pieces and transported to Kumasi, and the insects were reared from it for more than a year. More than 15 species of Coleoptera emerged from it, together with a rich parasite fauna.
