Egervár-Sárvíz canal. Fossil aurochs. Dimension of the postcranial bones (in mm) and calculated withers height (in cm) The aurochs skeleton found at Egervár in the Sárv íz canal used to belong to an aurochs bull of approximately 160,2 cm withers height. The comparable dimension of the Nagybajom fossil aurochs bull was 164,8 cm (Jánossy-Vörös 1981. 86). The withers height value calculated using Matolcsi's factor (Matolcsi 1970. 118) was 159,6 cm for the bones of the fore leg and 160,9 cm for the hind leg. The withers height values calculated from the individual long bones decreased from the proximal side: hum/fem. (163,5 - 161,5) - rad/tib. (159,1 - 160,4) and inc. (156,3), respectively. There is no direct evidence concerning the geological age of the Egervár aurochs. It is possible, that similar to the Nagybajom fossil aurochs skeleton, the bones originate from the Middle Pleistocene or the last interglacial period (R-W?). Photo by: Zsuzsanna D.
