So far, animal remains from two Mithraic temples (Aquincum and Künzig 1 0) as well as a Mithraic cave cult site (Tunnel C., Styria 1 1) have been published (Table In the following, available data are summarised from Mithraic temples of the Roman Empire. SYRIA Dura-Europo s (Es-Salihiyeh) Mithraeum sanctuary: The S-end of the altar table is a wooden block or box. Contains „great quantities of small bird s, shee p and fis h bones" 1 2. MOESIA INF. Tirgusor - Adam Cav e (Romania) In the cave, there was a small Mithraeum found containing "bones of swine". Its chronological position is uncertain 1 3. DACIA Sarmizegetus a (Várhely, Romania) At a little distance outside from the sanctuary, three pits were discovered with "animal bones, i.e., of he n and swin e 1 4". During the excavations in 1881-1883, a large number of animal bones were found: these were of cattl e, shee p, goa t and pi g. Pig remains comprised a lot of mandibulae and tooth fragments. Among the remains of birds, he n and duc k were found. Remains of red dee r and roe deer were also known from here 1 5. DALMATIA Jaj c e (Bosnia) In the sanctuary of the Mithraeum, in front of the relief, "remnants of bones" 16 were found. Konji c (Bosnia) In the Mithraeum, on the western side and along the northern wall, "bones of animals (ox, lamb, boar, birds)" 1 7 were found. PANNÓNIA Rozanec-Crnomel j (Slovenia) In the Mithraeum sanctuary, in front of the relief, "remnants of animal bones" 18 were found.
