SÁG VÁR LATE UPPER PALAEOLITHIC SIGHT (T IPO LOG I CAL ANALISYS OF THE TOOL-KIT) Chronology of the site The C-14 analyses made on the charcoal samples collected during the 1957 excavation give the following absolute chronological dates : 18.600±150 and 18.900± 100 (GRO.1783), for the lower culture layer and 17.400±100 és 17.760+150 (GRO. 1959) for the upper culture layer, all BP. Relativ chronology of the site: With the aid of certain experiments made during the Ságvár excavations Vera Gábori-Csánk had managed to identify here, too, that relatively humid climatic oscillation with a richer vegetation wich can be observed all over Europe during the continuous loess formation phase ofWürm III. period. To this so-colled "mini-interstadial" covering a period between about 18 and 1 7.000, are reckoned not only archeological sites but also some humus horizons which cannot be connected to Paleolithic layers. Vera Gábori-Csánk suggested the so-called "Lascaux-Sagvár interstadial" name for this period. 4 5 According to a more recent approach the Ságvár site can be put geochronologically into the Pilisszántó climato-fauna phase, to the Ságvár stage, between Dunaújváros h„-Tapiósüly h, fossil soil complexes. The site was inhabited during the two minor înilcl/humid interstadials. 4 6 Present cultural evaluation of the site The locality situated at a few kilometers' distance from Lake Balaton, served as a winter camp-site for groups specialized in reindeer hunting and belonging to the Gravettian cultural domain during the Late Upper Paleolithic. On the basis of the composition of animal bone material found at the site it seems that after chopping up game animals furs and meaty limbs were transported from the site to somewhere else. The archeological material of the two culture layers of the site is rich in tool types, howewer, considering its small quantity and scarce settlement phenomena we suppose that both culture layers were inhabited for only a short time. The population of the lower culture layer was followed 1200 years had passed by a froup the lithic industry of which was similar to that of the previous one as regards the presence of certain tool types, yet the typological distribution of tools is different in the two layers. From typo-technological viewpoint the industries of both layers of the Ságvár site can be reckoned to the same, s.l. Gravettian cultural domain, while we must not leave out consideration certain modifications which are rooted in local characteristics. One of them is a difference in the distribution rate between scrapers and burins of the two culture layers.
