Cs. Sós Ágnes - Parádi Nándor: A csátaljai Árpád-kori temető és település

ÄRPÄDIAN PERIOD CEMETERY AND SETTLEMENT 49 A Vágotthegyen előkerült kerámia-leletanyagból arra következtethetünk, hogy a falu a XIII. századot megérte. Fennállásának valószínűleg a tatárjárás vetett véget. . . 700. ÁRPÁDIAN PERIOD CEMETERY AND SETTLEMENT AT CSÁTALJ A 1. THE CEMETERY In 1951 a sand-pit was opened on the so-called Vagotthegy (Fig. 1), a hill in the vicinity of Csátalja, county Bács-Kiskun. The salvage excavations carried out during the years from 1951 to 1953 yielded 117 graves from the Árpádian period on the southern part of the hill top. Some 60 metres to N, the remains of an Árpádian period settlement were found as well (Fig. 2). The graves uncovered so far make up the N part of a larger cemetery, but only the N-W border of the cemetery could be determined as yet ( Fig. ß) . It may be presumed that at least the half of the cemetery, originally one of larger extension (about 250 graves) was destroyed previously. The graves on the area uncovered are situated in 15 rows, NW to SE, the main orientation of the graves or the skeletons being mostly SW to NE. A part of the graves, 49 in number, was disturbed. As for the double or triple burials the repeated use of the grave pits may be assumed, in the case of 17 graves, however, the disturbances must have been caused by grave robbers. In two graves (nos. 13, 18) skeletons of adults were found together with those of children; in one grave (no. 71) two children were buried together; in five cases in each grave the skeletons of two adult persons occurred. 4 The skeletons of the other 109 graves show following distribution by sex and age : females : 3 5 ; males : 19 ; adults of indefinable sex : 24 ; juveniles of indefinable sex: I ; infants: 30. 5
