Sándor Soproni: Two Inscribed Relics of the Cohors XIIX voluntariorum c. R

TWO INSCRIBED RELICS OF THE COHORS XIIX VOLUNTARIORUM C. R. 41 anus must have been one of the soldiers transferred here from various parts of the Empire after the destruction caused by the wars with the Marcomanni. After thewars of Marcus those of African origin became especially common in Pannónia. In general this can be attributed to the participation of legio III Augusta in the wars with the Marcomanni. After the war 4 8 some of the soldiers from the legion were detailed to local units. If our assumption is correct the stamped brick of Carnuntum must also be dated to this period and probably was concerned with the reconstruction following thewars with the Marcomanni. Thus cohors XIIX voluntariorum very likely participated in the rebuilding of Carnuntum and in connection with that it permanently left Cirpi, its former station.
