Banner János: Badeni leletek a szabolcsmegyei vissről

42 BANNER: FINDS OF THE BADEN CULTURE. FROM VISS (COUNTY SZABOLCS) 42 urn of the grave at Viss, even if we examine the deposits of the graves from Simontornya, 1 5 Szekszárd—Alsótemető, 1 6 Kajdács 1 7 or Felsőireg. 1 8 Even the burials at Fonyód 1 9 do not say anything concerning our urn, though some of the finds show a relationship with the finds from Viss. Those vessels which also determine the age of the urn from Viss require a quite seperate group. On the basis of our finds so far the characteristical formation of the handle, in its entire development only restricts it to a smaller area. Thé foreign link with these developed forms is unkown. Only on two sites beyond the present frontier of Hungary do they occur. One of the sites is near the area mentioned here. The Trencsén Museum preserves the one specimen, which is said to have come to light at Trencsén. 2 0 The other specimen was found at Ossarn 2 1 by Mr. Bayer. These specimens only resemble ours but do not agree with them in every respect. Until the present such handle formations have occurred in the Counties of Borsod, Szabolcs, Hajdu and Abaujtorna, but their forerunners can be traced from the west frontier, of Hungary across the Great Plain as far as the County of Borsod, and even in the area of Bohemia they can be found. 2 2 In Bohemia not only the frequent occurrence of the ansa lunata handle deserves attetion but also the curving and breaking up 2 3 between the two ends of the handle, although these are altogether different from those of our vessels. Among the Hungarian finds those specimens can be regarded as forerunners on which, instead of handle, double or triple notch was employed. Such specimens occurred at Basaharc 2 4 (Pl. IV, fig. 18), Kiskundorozsma 25 (PI. HI, fig. 15) and 3 5 Szekszárd Museum, nos. 10:38, 1, 2, 3. 1 6 Ibid. nos. 21:33, 8. 1 7 Ibid. nos. 3:938, 1, 2. 1 8 Ibid. nos. 4:933, 1, 2. 1 9 Bericht, 1934—35, Pl. III, fig. 21). Among these the finds from Basaharc, different but leading to our group, came to light together with a handled bowl (Pl. IV, figs. 22a—b) and mug (Pl. IV, figs. 17a—b) provided with an ansa lunata like decoration. These specimens from Basaharc deserve attention, as not the handles themselves are formed in the ansa lunata manner, but the projections are part of the rim on each side of the deepening of the handle, which latter does not rise above the mouth. Resembling these, but with the handle rising somewhat higher are the following specimens: from Keszthely 2 7 (PI. III, fig. 17), from Nyiregyháza-Morgótemető 2 8 (PI. III, fig. 10) — this site being very close to our area — and from Tiszakeszi 2 9 (Pl. IV, figs. 4a —b) a longish shaped vessel, where the two edges of the handle is strictly emphasised. There is also a vessel from Kiskunhalas 3 0 (PI. III, fig. 6) having a strongly projecting ansa lunata handle with moderate notch. The vessels mentioned here are noteworthy for the protuberant parts on the two edges of the handle. To this group belong also two vessels from Zebegény 3 1 (PI. III, fig. 18; Pl. IV, fig. 9) though the breaking up is not so definite; further one from Esztergom 3 2 (PI. III, fig. 5) with a pierced lug, where the two edges are strictly projecting. The same is also determinable on the fragment of a similar handle from Szikra 3 3 (PI. III, fig. И). This breaking up of the handles is also striking in the bipartite bowls group. We know it among the handles of Baden culture from the characteristical pierced handle on the fragment from Ágasegyház 3 4 (Pl. IV, fig. 13) and Bodzáspart 3 5 (PI. IV, fig. 15) and it is also definitely recognisable on the side of the bipartite bowl from Uny 3 6 (Pl. Ill, fig. 16).
