Banner János: Badeni leletek a szabolcsmegyei vissről
BANNER: FINDS OF THE BADEN CULTURE. FROM VISS (COUNTY SZABOLCS) 43 National Museum there is one similar specimen from Békésszentandrás, but with only two protuberances, which form occurred also at Békásmegyer. Its occurrence among the finds from Uny is also important because it recurs 3 7 as decoration in the form of a wide flat ribbon-handle with four protuberances (PI. III, fig. 14) which is already in close connection with our group of vessels. This protuberance, as a purely decorative element recurs also on the fragment of a handle of a quite differently shaped vessel from Békásmegyer. 3 8 Antecedents and related phenomena occur everywhere throughout Hungary, as the aforementioned cases demonstrate, but the complete definite breaking up of the handles is spread generally only in the four aforementioned counties. A fragment is known of a handle from Ohat 3 9 (Pl. IV, fig. 16) (County Hajdu) which breaks up with an ornamentation terminating peculiarly flat, also several specimens from Ernőd 4 0 (Pl. IV, fig. 12) (County Borsod), but also it occurs at Nagyfalu 4 1 (Pl. IV, fig. 1) (County Abaujtorna), at Jászó 4 2 (County Abaujtorna) and at Tiszapolgár 4 3 (County Szabolcs) •(Pl. IV, fig. 20). On these specimens the handle breaks up into three or four parts and always rises to the same height, never higher than the rim. At Tiszapolgár this form mixes with another characteristic form 4 4 on which the protuberances rise above the handle (Pl. Ill, fig. 12) but still all of them are of the same height, and with another form 4 5 on which the two protuberances on the edges are higher, and in the middle of the handle they are not only smaller but do not reach the height of the rim (Pl. Ill, fig. 13). From this form develops that on which the two protuberances on the rim take on a more definite shape and those on the handle are divided in two, but hardly noticable. This form occurs 37 Ibid.: no. 855. 38 Bericht, 1934—35, Pl. 17, 6. 3 9 In the Debrecen Museum. 4 0 In the Miskolc Museum. 4 1 Kassa Museum: no. 434. 4 2 Eisner op. cit. XVIII, 1. — Its antecedent: ibid, no. 3. 4 3 In the Jósa Museum. 4 4 Ibid. « Ibid. also among the finds of Tiszapolgár 4 6 (PI. IV, fig. 5), characterises the material from Nagyfalu 4 7 (Pl. IV, fig. 11) just as much as that from Királyhelmec 4 8 (Pl. IV, fig. 10) and occurred also above the ribbon-handle of the bipartite bowl found at Zbuska-puszta 4 9 (Pl. IV, figs. 21a —b). This form came to light at Bodrogkeresztur too. Similar fragments are also known from Tiszapolgár, but already with disc-like extension. These forms, with their ends beginning to be pointed, lead already, through the handles found at Tiszapolgár 5 0 (PI. III, fig. 19) and Tiszadada 5i (Pl. Ш, fig. 22) to the material of our vessels. Besides which we know in Tiszapolgár 5 2 a whole series of this type of handle (Fig. 1), among which the notch-edge as well as the several-fold breaking up and the disc-ends (Pl. IV, fig. 19), further the one protuberance placed above the handle can be found. This latter occurs also among the finds of Viss (Pl. I, fig. 6). Its antecedents lead to distant areas. We know fewer foreign links with these, than with the former group. In Bohemia 5 3 only one or two specimens have come to light and in Ossarn 54 also very rarely. But in Slovakia 5 5 they occur too, and in Hungary we find them practically everywhere. One of the most beautiful specimens was found on the Burgstall 5 6 at Sopron (Pl. IV, figs. 14a—b) on which still only the simple protuberance is characteristic, projecting in a beautiful curve from the mouth of the vessel where it touches the handle. The formation on the side of the handle is also in complete harmony with the vessel, which is decorated with flutings and three subcutaneous handles. This projection must have been very familiar in the district of Sopron. We know six vessels (Pl. Ill, figs. 2—4, 7—9), less finely executed and decorated with flutings from Nagycenk, 5 7 4 6 Ibid. 4 7 Kassa Museum: nos. 435 and 1024. 4 8 In the Miskolc Museum. 4 9 In the Jósa Museum. so Ibid. si Ibid. 5 2 Ibid. 53 Stocky: op. cit.
