FOGORVOSI SZEMLE ■ 98. évf. Supplementum, 2005. 21 Profile and Competences The identification of agreed common outcomes presents a particular challenge to dentistry not only as the new graduate is required to undertake safely the independent practice of dentistry but as the educational and training programmes differ greatly. This is best achieved by agreeing on an overall profile for the European dentist. The Association for Dental Education in Europe in collaboration with the DentEd thematic network has elaborated a set of seven domains with a minimal set of major and supporting competences. The document was approved by the General Assembly of ADEE in September 2004 at the Annual Meeting in Cardiff, Wales. Meanwhile translations of the document in several European languages are available on the web (http://adee/dental.tcd.ie/). Our ultimate goal is that all European dental schools will adhere to, or adopt as policy, the profile and the 17 major competences (although the supporting competences may vary in detail between schools). Our hope is that the availability of this document will assist dental schools in Europe to further harmonise and improve the quality of their curricula. The document will be reviewed in five years time (2009). Therefore a formal document inventory and review process is planned to begin in 2007-and we will need your help with and participation in this process! ADEE and DentEd Realising the significance of the impact of the DentEd project on dental education, ADEE agreed in 2004 that the Project would integrate itself within the ADEE umbrella, In order to ensure the sustainability of the DentEd network outside EU funding, and in order to reach the goals of the amalgamated organisation, the ADEE Executive Committee decided that it needed to grow into a professional organisation. Therefore, ADEE has accelerated the merge of both ADEE and DentEd and established a core, professional, permanent office in Dublin to better serve the dental education community in Europe.
