AERDEN, MICHÉLE PRESIDENT OF FDI The missions and actions of FDI are discussed, with regard to their impact on our daily dental practice, and the future perspectives for the dental profession and patients in the World, in Europe and in Hungary. Key words: FDI, mission, action FDI World Dental Federation. The vision of the FDI is “Leader in World Dentistry”. FDI Mission Statement: 1. Worldwide Voice of Dentistry To be the authoritative, professional, independent world­wide voice of dentistry. 2. Optimal Oral and General Health To promote optimal oral and general health for all peo­ple. 3. Support of Members To promote the interests of member associations and their members. 4. Exchange of Information To advance and promote the art, science and practice of dentistry. ad 1. The Voice of Dentistry FDI represents-157 regular or associate Member Associations, repre­senting 921.000 dentists.-35 international associations, and FDI works together with:- The United Nations (UN),- World Health Organisation (WHO),- International Organisation of Standardisation (ISO) ad 2. Optimal Oral Health Worldwide FDI develops, supports and promotes programmes aimed at prevention of oral diseases and improvement of general and oral health. FDI provides expertise and advice. With its World Dental Development Committee, FDI supports appropriate technology and evidence-based approaches to the integration of oral health into gener­al health programmes with emphasis on prevention and policy development. For example: Conference of Nairobi: FDI organ­ised a Planning Conference for Oral health in the Afri­can Region, with the presence of the Vice-President of Kenya. Ministers of Health and Finances and the Chief Dental Officers and Presidents of African dental associ­ations attended the meeting; in total 181 delegates from 59 countries. FDI succeeded in its aim to make political leaders aware of the link between oral health and general health through the “Nairobi Declaration of Oral Health in Africa”. The outcome was that countries received for the first time a budget or an increase of their Oral Health bud­get. 10 countries started with a prevention programme for Noma. Others asked help for strategy planning. The participation of representatives of WHO and UN enhanced the impact of the Conference. ad 3.
