Barr STATE OF NEW YORK EXECUTIVE CHAMBER ALBANY PROCLAMATION In 1956 an example of tyranny at its worst exhibited to the world in the suppression of the Hungarian revolution by Soviet troops. The Hungarian fighters for freedom were chiefly young people of college and even high school age. They fought with skill and courage, and it took Soviet veterans equipped with the most modern of deadly weapons to defeat them. The reprisals, carried out by Soviet soldiers, were characteristically ruthless. Hundreds of teenage boys were kept in prison until they were 18 years old, the legal age of execution. Exactly how many of them executed after two to three years in prison may never be known, but the facts of more than a score of such cases have been verified. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim October 23, 1963, as HUNGARIAN FREEDOM FIGHTERS DAY in New York State. GIVEN under my hand in the City of New York and the Privy Seal of the State at the Capitol in the City of Albany this tenth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and sixty-three. Az alábbiakban kiemelünk néhány idézetet az említett üzenetekből: Senator Keating táviratából: “Please convey my warm greetings to all attendance at the Seventh Anniversary Celebration in Commemoration of the Hungarian Revolution. The courage displayed by the Hungarian Freedom Fighters in their effort to liberate Hungary from communist imprisonment is an inspiration to people throughout the world struggling against tyranny. I am proud that our nation has provided a haven for some of those oppressed by the communist dictatorship which encircles the Hungarian people and I pray that the magnificent example which the Freedom Fighters provided will never be forgotten.’’ Senator Dodd táviratából: “The great Hungarian revolution of October 23, 1956 which I consider to be one of the bravest — and most glorious battles of man’s immemorial struggle for freedom. — The red army by massing 20 divisions and 5,000 tanks was able to supress the Hungarian revolution. But they were unable to suppress the spirit which gave rise to it or the dramatic heroism — proof that communism is utterly without popular support. In — the broader historical sense — the Hungarian Revolution was a great victory for the cause of freedom even in defeat it — points the way to the Free Hungary of tomorrow a better and happier one where men can enjoy those Inalienable Rights for which men have fought and risked their lives since the beginning of history”. Senator Ralph Yarborough leveléből: “The communist conspiracy which has enslaved so much of the world and which would destroy all our freedoms is relentless. Free people everywhere must continue unabatedly to oppose this threat to our liberty. Please extend to all gathered there my best wishes for those who devote their efforts that people everywhere may continue to enjoy the freedoms dear to men and women of every country and to the (L.
