TANULMÁNYOK - Papp István: Felújított könyvtárak a Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Könyvtár hálózatában (2002-2004)

István Papp RENOVATED BRANCH LIBRARIES IN THE NETWORK OF THE METROPOLITAN ERVIN SZABÓ LIBRARY The reconstructed and enlarged Central Library of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library opened its gates on 11th September, 2001. It marked a new era in the life of the Central Library as well as in the history of Budapest public library network. The paper examines how a few units of the system have developed their potentials to serve the visitors and meet their requirements. The study focusing on the years of 2002-2004 gives information on the results in maintaining, refurbishing the library buildings, reorganizing services, informing readers on the establishment of some brand new units. By relevant renewal schemes the management was aware of the necessity of development, the whole branch library system should be made suitable for having the same or similar quality of operation and services to the ones represented by the newly opened Central Library. In 2001 conception of development was accepted and all parties agreed to work out the project in the subsequent years. In 2002 start of project realization was one of the most important tasks to be solved. In 2003 two important fields of improvement were proposed, namely to modernize the library network and develop IT system. According to the library strategies in 2004 the central aims were to continue developing the network including modernization of branch libraries, to improve the quality of operation conditions and reorganize all library services in each unit. Though the development of IT system is in the interests of the whole institution, mainly the branch libraries enjoy its benefits. Modernization of the network, of course, has a wide scope of external and internal redecoration of the given location and the development of facilities. The paper examines in details how this process was realized in each unit under the period of the yearbook (2002-2004). 156
