Papp István : A változások menedzselése a Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Könyvtár hálózatában. The heads of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library initiated major changes in library services, in compliance with the changes occurring in its social environment. The management of changes required a new attitude not only from the upper, but also from the middle management, what is more, from each of the staff members. Innovative behaviour was a prerequisite of the continuous renewal of library services, as regards both its contents and organization. Innovation concentrated mainly on three areas. Structural innovation meant a realization of the concept of system development (creating new types of libraries, establishing the central supply service). To innovation in services belong the renewal of children’s and music services, the introduction of lending vidéocassettes, the alteration of library premises. The most important innovations in management include: the decentralization of management, the spreading of fee-based services, the strengthening of cost-consciousness and the preparations for fusions on a regional basis (i.e. placing the libraries of some districts under one direction). Barczi Zsuzsa: Könyvtárhasználati szokások vizsgálata a Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Könyvtárban. The essay analyses the findings of a survey made in 1993, in 18 libraries representing the system of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. Data have been collected in the course of one week interviewing a random sample of 2138 library visitors. The survey was made by questionnaire and covered three main dimensions of library use: 1. the structure of demand: the aim, frequency of library visits, the use of library services, the types of user behaviour; 2. interest: in types of materials and their content, based on borrowing habits and the materials borrowed; 3. the image of the library: satisfaction with library supply and the expectations towards the library resp. The conclusions can be utilized not only in library practice, but also contribute to becoming aware of the changes in cultural processes. Karbach Erika: A számítógépes szociológiai témafigyelö szolgáltatás 10 éve /1984-1993 / The essay traces the development of the SDI service, provided by the Department of Sociological Documentation of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library, from the beginnings to our days. The technical and personal preconditions for the service have been created in the years 1982-1983, and the contents of information processing and the methodology of services have been parallclly elaborated. The development of SDI services has been closely related to the computerisation of the Library: the indexing of international literature - with the application of the Floppymat microcomputer, while later the indexing of the Hungarian literature on sociology - with the development of the TEXTAR software. In the period 1984 to 1988 computerised processing and services were concentrated on international journals and books on sociology. Major achievements of the period 1988 to 1993 arc the inclusion of Hungarian specialist literature among the services, the unification of processing methods for the two databases, and the equal conditions of both services. Developing the SDI services after 1993 the aim is to limit the own processing to Hungarian materials and the international books acquired by the Library. International literature and newspaper articles related to sociology will be mediated to users from external (CD-ROM and online) databases. Sándor Tibor: Fényképgyüjtés és ikonográfiái feltárás a várostörténeti dokumentáció szolgálatában. The Budapest Collection of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library has been collecting - in addition to traditional library materials - engravings, photos of town-historical interest for almost 80 years, and has been processing the images hidden in printed works in iconographical publications. The essay describes in brief these activities, the photo collection of 100.000 pcs and the computerised image database being developed. It also dwells on some more comprehensive, theoretical issues of handling and archiving photos as sources of historical value. 117
