The history of Polgárdi
well. The unity of agricultural producing, procurement and sale became a more and more important factor. The mill industry of the settlement was advanced by Vilmos Akóts, a credit society and a beauty aid association worked and the Batthyány estates formed industrial units. The positive changes were broken by the second world war and later by the Soviet-type dictatorship. Nationalizations took place, large estates were liquidated in 1945, the liquidation of peasant holdings began in 1948, the tradesmen's workshops and the salesmen's shops did not avoid collectivization either. The terrorization of the inhabitants rose to the highest pitch by the execution of István Császár by made up charges on 31st March 1953. In October 1956 the inhabitants of Polgárdi - like the honvéd unit stationing in the settlement - took an oath on the revolution and war of independence. For decades they preserved the mentality of the democratic change despite the retorsions. The change of regime began in 1989, whose overture was the organization of the democratic parties, its fulfilment was the legistlative and municipal elections held in 1990. The changes developed in Polgárdi proved to be significant in economy as well. The population exceeds 6200, the number of enterprises approaches 450, unemployment is only 3%. In the fulfilment of the areal tasks development can be experienced, too. German and Austrian investments took place and negotiations started about the formation of American interests. The symbols of the town have been created by the corporation of representatives. The coat of arms of Polgárdi is connected to the historical past and to the economic situation. In the first field of the shield, on a green mound against blue background a gold sheaf of corn, in the second field, the main motif of the Batthyány family's coat of arms, a pelican feeding its youngs with its own blood can be seen. The flag is divided horizontally, it is blue and silver (white).
