8. oldal Habitat for Humanity at Vác, Hungary Habitat for Humanity, founded by Millard Fuller and his wife, Linda, is an organization concerned with providing a house for families in need of housing, at cost, and with an interest free mortgage. One of the qualifications for acceptance is that the families must have a steady income from which to pay this mortgage. Close to 50,000 houses have been built around the world by Habitat volunteers, who pay their own way to help in this building project. This year alone, Habitat for Humanity International plans to build 12,000 houses, 4000 of these in the United States and the rest in all parts of the world. It was my distinct pleasure to participate in the Jimmy Carter Work Project in Vac, Hungary. What an experience this was! One hundred people from the United States, 200 from every continent of the world, and approximately 200 Hungarians participated in this “blitz” effort to build lOhouses in 5 days! You can’t imagine the sound of more than 200 hammers putting up the framework of these houses, including the rafters, the very first day. It had to Ten houses under construction in Vác by volunteers of Habitat for Humanity be seen and heard to be believed. President Jimmy Carter’s house was #8. He and his wife, Rosalyn, worked on it every day. Each of the 10 houses was sponsored by businesses like Dow Chemical, Honeywell, Indianapolis Insurance, Coming, and others. The meals were catered by organizations like the Budapest Marriott Hotel, Burger King, Rotary Club of Budapest. Citibank donated trees for each new house. I saw a lot more Pepsi than I did water. At&T and MCI offered phone service. Each house had a chief boss, 4 other specialist bosses, a translator, and 20 workmen. Specialized work such as wiring and plumbing, were done at night, and the rest of the work was done by the volunteers during the day. It took more than just these workmen to take care of a group as large as ours: organizers of the project who “kept on top of things” and solved problems, transportation crew, people who registered the workers and visitors, First Aid nurses and ambulance drivers, those in charge of evening programs and the music during meals, people in charge of housing this many people, and a large group of volunteers to feed everybody 3 times a day. Some of the elderly helped keep the grounds cleared and clean. Security guards kept the curious town folk at a distance. Radio and TV personnel roamed everywhere and interviews were given constantly. Pres. Jimmy Carter (with red bandana) finishing house number 8. Vác, Hungary It was announced that the government agreed to have 5 more Habitat houses built in Vác. Others will be built elsewhere in Hungary. Interested parties observed daily how this work was being done. Habitat for Humanity exemplifies one’s faith expressed in deed. In the second chapter of James, we read that faith without works is dead and that by works was faith made perfect, in his epistle to the Galatians, Paul encourages us not to be weary in well doing, and that if we have the opportunity, do good unto all men. In Vac, Hungary, during one week, Christ ’s love was demonstrated to 10 families, with a total of 19 children, who no longer need to live with their parents, but who can live in their own home for the very first time. The homeowners tearfully accepted these new homes. Many friendships were made between volunteers and these 10 families. The people of Hungary tried to show their appreciation for the work done by this large group of volunteers in various ways. Many were cited by the city and government officials for their special contribution. For me, going to my father’s homeland was indeed a special and unique experience this time. It was my way of giving something back to the land which gave me my rich Hungarian heritage, Being a part of the Habitat for Humanity Work Project 1996 in Vac, Hungary, was an experience I shall never forget.
