(By Martha Hope, former resident of Bethesda who returned to her former beloved Melbourne, FL home fully recuperated from a serious illness) Set upon a hill — surrounded by many majestic trees Birds nesting or flying over the sparkling water Comfortable rooms and lovely apartments Delicious aromas wafting from the home-cooked meals A great service rendered by an expert hair dresser Efficient service from laundresses and housekeepers Good entertainment from faithful volunteers Many activities held in an attractive library, craft room and lounges Daily Christian fellowship and Sunday services in the adjacent Chapel Loving care from a wonderful staff and thoughtful nurses aides Association and friendship with the greatest people from many states This and much more — BETHESDA IS. Mrs. Martha Hope was featured in the January 1992 Gospel Messenger edition when she wrote a poem of tribute to our 100 year old resident, Hilda Greutert. Mrs. Hope also gifted The Home with several hymn books which were used by her pastor father. We appreciate so much her continuing love, communications and visits. A special Father’s Day dinner was prepared with an open invitation for family to join fathers and grandfathers. Our gentlemen received a gift of remembrance. Special music was played by our resident pianist, Mrs. Elizabeth Winchester, after breakfast and dinner. After the Doxology, everyone joined in to sing Faith of our Fathers! With the Hurricane Season upon us, for our residents to be better informed and prepared, Ms. Miriam Seleway, Special Projects Co-ordinator for the Civil Defense spoke to them to alleviate some of their fears and to explain where the shelters are located. A question and answer period was held. Employees were given brochures to better inform them and their family members and to know some of their duties during an emergency. We are into our second week of professional training on the computer in The Bethesda office. This has opened a brand new world for us and we are amazed at what can be accomplished. It is a privilege to have with us Louis Drescher, Treasurer of The Hungarian Baptist Union to give us specialized tutoring for our Adult Congregate Living Facility to set up the computer. Hopefully, in time, all this will run smoothly. On the last Monday of June, the day was set aside as Hawaii Day. The dining room was festively decorated in green and gold. Each resident was asked to dress in colorful clothing. There were many ladies dressed in authentic Hawaiian long dresses which they purchased during one of their visits to The Islands. Our Activity Director, Evelyn McHugh, presented each person with a lei to further dress up their apparel. The luau began with appropriate music, a delicious dinner and mid-afternoon, after a musical interlude, punch was served with a variety of cheeses, pineapple and crackers. It was most rewarding to see a good crowd attend. This gathering was a break-through for our newer residents to join in some of the activities for the first time. We want to thank all of you who regularly pray for the work here at Bethesda. It is amazing how your letters arrive on those special days when God has something to share with our people. Thank you for your financial help and many kindnesses. God bless you.
