1975. január 15. EVANGÉLIUMI HÍRNÖK 5. oldal ka megemlékezés is volt. Az egyik: 50 éves házassági évfordulójukat ünnepelték Werle Henrik testvér és felesége, Loch Katalin. Családjuk minden tagja, két fiuk, két menyük és öt unokájuk velük együtt ünnepelt az imaházban. Jókívánságainkat imában, igében és ajándékokban fejeztük ki testvéreink iránt, hogy ötven éven keresztül nemcsak egymáshoz, hanem az Űrhöz is nagyon hűségesek voltak. Molnár Balázs testvér, Szövetségünk elnöke mondott igei köszöntőt, mert ő a 30-as évek végén, amikor Torontóba költözött, szinte harmadik gyermeke volt a Werle családnak. Werle testvérék Pécsen születtek, ott fogadták el mindketten az Urat, és ott is volt házasságkötésük 1924-ben. 1930-ban kivándoroltak Kanadába, és attól kezdve gyülekezetünk tagjai. Tehát a kezdet kezdetén kapcsolódtak be a gyülekezet életébe. Werle testvér 30 évig volt az énekkar vezetője, majd pedig, mint a gyülekezet fölavatott vénje végzett nagyon értékes munkát. Werle testvérnő pedig, mint vasárnapi iskolai tanító és a női bibliakör vezetője végzett áldott szolgálatokat. Werle testvért betegsége már néhány éve megakadályozza abban, hogy tevékeny tagja legyen a gyülekezetnek, de még így is nagyon ritkán fordul elő, hogy hetenként legalább egyszer ne legyen közöttünk. Testvémőnk pedig ma is tevékeny tagként szolgál nemcsak a gyülekezetben, hanem a vasárnapi iskolában és a női bibliakörben. Isten áldását kívánjuk további életükre. A másik megemlékezésünk Gáspár Sándor testvérünknek szólt, mint gyülekezetünk egyik alapító tagjának. Két jelentős dátumot ünnepeltünk vele együtt 75 évvel ezelőtt született és 50 évvel ezelőtt fogadta el az Urat. 1924-ben, Magyarországon, Bagamér községben 79 fehérruhás tett bizonyságot hitéről, és követte bemerítésben az Úr Jézus példáját. Gáspár testvér is közöttük volt, mert Nyiracsádon született és ott is fogadta el az Urat. Az ottani gyülekezet életében is nagy jelentőségű dátum ez, mert ez a gyülekezet megalakulásának a dátuma is. így testvérünk két gyülekezetnek is alapító tagja lehetett: Nyiracsádon és Torontóban, Gáspár testvér egy kedves üdvözlő lapot is kapott Nyiracsádról, ott is megemlékeztek róla, mint alapító tagról az ősz folyamán tartott 50 éves jubileum alkalmával. Gáspár testvért azért is köszöntöttük a gyülekezetben, mivel az alapító tagok közül egyedül ő tudott jelen lenni ünneplésünk alkalmával. Kedves volt a visszaemlékezése, amikor elmondta, hogyan is indult el a kezdeti időben a kis magyar csoport. Testvérünk a 45 éven keresztül kitartott és nemcsak hűséges tagságával tett szép bizonyságot mindnyájunk előtt, hanem életével is. A gyülekezetben többféle szolgálatot végzett testvérünk, és még ma is minden területen helyt áll: fölavatott vén, vasárnapi iskolai tanító és tagja az énekkarnak. Gáspár testvér életére is Istenünk áldását kívánjuk, és azt, hogy továbbra is hűséggel szolgálja az Urat és a gyülekezetét. Viczián János n OUR HERITAGE We Americans of Hungarian ancestry have a long and proud heritage. Quite often, however we fail to recognize the accomplishments of our mothers and fathers. Those of us with Hungarian Baptist backgrounds are even more fortunate to have had the training and experiences which were provided for us. In order to fully appreciate what has been accomplished, we must first recognize the conditions which prevailed during those formative years. Our parents immigrated to a land supposedly filled with milk and honey. They came by droves in the holds of ships which in itself was a dreadful experience. They came into a country that did not understand their language nor their customs. They came into a country beset with economic woes and prejudices. They came into a coutnry that was strange and unknown to them. And yet they came. Impoverished, uneducated, and without effective direction, they set out to create a better life for themselves and their families. I wonder if we would have had the courage and the “guts” to do what they did. Some went to work in mines, some became common laborers and scrub women, and far too few entered school to further their education. It was in this environment that they accepted Christ as their personal Saviour and placed the development of their Christian experience before all other matters. They developed a strong faith in God, they prayed and worked to build churches and missions to reach the unsaved. Without the aid of TV, or, yes, even without radio they raised families which even today are an active Christian influence in their communities. Our Hungarian Baptist Churches thus became an extremely viable influence among the Hungarian communities for almost sixty years. With the passing of time, however, the need for a Hungarian language church diminished and in many instances they ceased to operate entirely. It then became evident that the matter and manner of continuing the remaining churches became of paramount importance. More of our churches ceased their operation, because they felt that their church had served its purpose and that a Hungarian mission was no longer a necessity. Other churches dropped their Hungarian language services and Americanized. Many of these churches still exist and are serving a real need in their community. Some of those early Hungarian Baptist Churches are still in existence, and they too continue to serve a real need within their community. Time has, however, undeniably eroded the ranks of our Hungarian Baptist Churches. Our old timers have passed on to glory, and many of those who remain are aged and infirm.
