Minden arc fénylő, elragadtatott. Hozsanna száll ujjongva szerteszét. Száz anya áll az út kétoldalún, feje fölé emelve kisdedét. A nap csak ámul, szemének se hisz, és keresi, kit ünnepel a nép? Nem lát mást, csak egy szelíd alakot, s egy szamarat, mely bólogatva lép. Nincs pompa, nincs ékes királyi dísz, így vonul a szegények Mestere, szemében könny, szívének fáj az ünnep s mellére hajlik bánatos feje, de mégis Isten, kit csoda kísér, melyhez hasonlót a nap sohse lát, hogy úgy fogadjon egy koldust a nép, mint diadalmas hadvezért, s királyt, a nép, mely porban csúszik, s talpát nyalja azoknak, akik durván rátaposnak, a nép, most egyszer! hozsannát kiáltott a megvetettnek, az alázatosnak! Aranypor száll a sokaság felett, de rossz agyakban erjed már a végzet. Jaj, nem tudja még senki sem, csak Ő, hogy ötödnapra a föld mire ébred!
