DATA ТО THE HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF PSYCHOLINGUISTICS AND TO THE TASKS IT FACES by Szabó István The I. chapter of this paper made up of 2 chapters traces the history of psycholingvistics (PsL) as a new branch of social sciences, back to the early 50-ies of this century when the first steps were taken in the U. S. by S. Saporta, Th. Os­good, T. Sebeok and other scholars concerned with problems pertaining partly to psychology, partly to linguistics, to jointly solve such problems. A brief reference is made to the new trends in PsL in other countries as well: in the U. S. S. R., France, G. D. R. and in West-Germany. The prehistory of PsL, it is pointed out further, goes back to the 19th century when linguistics and psychology began cooperating to solve questions arising on the „frontiers" of the two. Chapter II is concerned with subject-matter proper of PsL. On the basis of his research the author found some difference in conceiving the subject of PsL by scholars in the U. S. on one hand and by Soviet scholars on the other. Experiments by both Soviet and American scholars to prove the reality of either Chomsky's or Osgood's model of speech generating are analysed, their results compared and conflicting assertions pointed out. Psycholingvistic problems of semantics are touched upon, mainly on the basis of the present state of research in the U. S. S. R. In connec­tion with bilinguism the psychology of foreign language teaching is referred to.
