KARÁSZI ISTVÁN DINNYÉSEK A MÁTRAALJÁN ABSTRACT: (Melon growers in the region of Mátraalja) There are three areas in Heves county, where most of the people deal with growing melon. One of the three areas is Heves and the surrounding villages another one is Erdőtelek. The third region in question is the Environs ofHort-Csány. The latter has been investigated by the author of this paper since 19 91. At Hort, for example, twenty percent of the active population are melon growers . These people work in the melon fields from February till October and return to Hort only in winter. Fifty five percent of the families go to work in the same place in summer and forty five percent of the melon growers keep moving to other areas. Most of these people work in Heves county (30%) and Pest county (18%). This work is very hard and the melon growers hardly ever have spare time,which is compensated by a relatively high salary. Seven percent of the population at Hort is unemployed,so in the author s opinion this way of life will be long-lasting.
