95 DIAKONIA Lutheran Review Summary Protestant faith and worship are Bible- centred. Theological and devotional trends differ according to their basic attitudes to the Bible. To the challenges of Bible criticism dating probably from the early 18th C, theologian pastor and scripture teacher Mrs. Takács Zelma Kovácsházi addresses the three answers provided by the fundamentalist, the critical believer and the cultural historian viewpoints. She argues in favour of those who dare bravely probe the profane in order to reveal the Holy One. \ In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Peter Bornemisza Society in Vienna, we are presenting extracts from the radio interview with István Szépfalusi, founding secretary of the Society and pastor of the Hungarian Lutheran community in Austria. Serving over the past decades as the first foothold for many refugees, he was also the one to open the nearest door onto the road leading to universal Hungarian culture. ’The melody upholds the text and the text supports the melody’ — was the creed of music scientist Bence Szabolcsi (1899—1973). His pupil András Pernye (1928—1980), a master himself, researched among others the histories of the Tnnsbrucklied’, the source melody of the coral ’Now all the woods are sleeping’ which is still sung at Lutheran worship, and of ’Monica’ on which the hymn ’From God will nothing move me’ is based. The publisher Katalin Fittler was Pernye’s pupil. Her introductory essay is about the role of ’auditive déja vu’ and related melodies. In his essay physics teacher Peter Vankó seeks an answer to how prominent physicists in our century related to transcendence and what they thought about transcendentalism. Quantum theory which played the most decisive role in changing the world concept in physics was developed jointly by a number of physicists. The older generation (Planck, Einstein, Schrödinger) were still reared on the traditional values of classical physics which influenced their thinking to the end of their lives. For the young people gathered around Bohr (Heisenberg, Pauli, Dirac) the new physics seemed natural which in turn influenced their world concept. Nevertheless, all shared the common experience of final order, of universal unity. Accepting the invitation of the Government of the Republic in Hungary and the Hungarian Catholic Bishops Conference — the Pope John Paul II. visits Hungary aug 16—20. Various opinions appeared in the public as well as in other denominations in connection with this event. The author of this article Károly Hafenscher emphasizes the ecumenical opennes on one hand and on the other hand the maintenance of Protestant identity. He expresses his certain hope that this visit may improve the efforts towards unity and does not cause any hindrances in the days to come. (Dr. Karoly Hafenscher is Editor of Lelkipásztor — a Lutheran Monthly for Pastors). Besides the papers reviewed above also a full Table of Contents is included in the English and German languages.
