Peter of Poitiers’s letter to Peter the Venerable

Translation with introduction and notes

Peter the Venerable (1094–1156), abbot of Cluny can be justly regarded as the found-er of Islamic studies in the west. It was on his initiative that the so-called Toledan Collection came to be written that contained among other translations the first Latin version of the Quran. His secretary and friend, Peter of Poitiers (c. 1080 – † 21st August 1161) himself actively participated in this translation project. His letter to the ab

-bot from the year 1145 not only testifies their close friendship, but speaks of the Liber contra sectam – the abbot’s planned refutation of the Islamic doctrine. Here the Hungarian translation of the letter is presented with a short introduction and some explanatory notes.
