Calvin Synod Herald, 2010 (111. évfolyam, 1-12. szám)

12 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD for almost three decades, and he was warmly welcomed by all. In a special congregational meeting on June 14, 2008, with the Rt. Rev. Koloman Ludwig, Bishop of the Calvin Synod, United Church of Christ presiding, Rev. Torok was unanimously elected as the new pastor of the congregation. It was at this time that the members of the congregation authorized the consistory to commence discussion with the Woodbridge Hungarian Reformed Church about a merger of the two congregations. It needs to be noted that initial overtures reflected a mutual willingness to combine the churches for a more effective worship service for years to come, with the understanding that the John Calvin Church building would be sold first. In the light of this great decision, the new Pastor’s call would indeed be a challenging one indeed. With this decision in the background, Rev. Torok started his new ministry on August 1, 2008. During the past year we are happy to report that attendance has stabilized. Worship services are held every Sunday, and since there are still a few members who prefer the Hungarian language, we offer a summary of the English sermon and select hymns that are available in both languages. With the dwindling membership and the greater financial burden that is placed upon the congregation, we had no other choice but to put our church building, including the Parsonage, up for sale. So far we are able to continue our church’s life and meet our financial obligations and will do so until we find a buyer that would meet our financial expectation from the sale of our church. The Consistory is making every effort to direct the life of the congregation together with the pastor so the members would never feel threatened that we would just give away the church for which so many have worked and which will remain always the spiritual home of the congregation. These are the challenges that are before us. We trust and hope that God will lead and guide us that we will find a solution, always keeping in mind: “For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations. ” Psalml00:5 Rev.
