FHRC Pittsburgh Takes a Walk Down 100-Year-Old Memory Lane Saturday, July 3,2004 marked a milestone in the history of the F irst Hungarian Reformed Church of Pittsburgh. The congregation celebrated the 100th anniversary of the consecration and dedication of their present day sanctuary. There were two events to celebrate the occasion. On Saturday June 26, 2004, Rev. Ilona Komjáthy held a worship service attended by approximately 150 people. Some of the same hymns that were sung 100 years ago were included. Rt. Rev. Karl K. Ludwig, Bishop of the Calvin Synod, gave the sermon. Also participating in the service were the clergy of the Central Classis: Rev. Dr. Joseph Posta, Rev. Levente Molnár and Rev. Imre Bertalan. Following this was a banquet held in Calvin Hall and a presentation by the Archives Committee with displays and photos. The original dedication service took place on July 3,1904. So the next Saturday, July 3, 2004, there was another event. At that time the members of the congregation walked or rode in carriages from their original church on Bates Street in Pittsburgh to the new sanctuary 2.2 miles away. Over 20 present-day members marked that occasion with a “Centennial Walk.” The former church still exists and photographs were taken of the present day church members standing in the same positions as their ancestors, as depicted in photographs we found that had been taken 100 years ago. This event was a “real” walk down memory lane for our members. Thanks to all who celebrated with us or remembered us on this very special occasion.
