8 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Church Youth Camp 2000 The Hungarian Reformed Youth Camp for the year 2000 was attended by more than 90 campers, staff and guests, representing 15 different congregations. The theme was “Choices: The Truth and Consequences.” The topics related to all types of choices faced by today’s teens in relationships, life-styles, the real world and their faith in God, which must be made daily and yet have long lasting consequences depending on the decisions they make. Morning lectures were reinforced by evening workshops, which dealt with how the media influences our lives. In the afternoon there were Bible studies and group game activities. However, the campers and staff learned some very important things in every different way on their annual midweek visit to the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, PA. A special service project was performed by the entire camp at the senior care center. Campers were given their choice of several projects, indoors or out, to do at the Home. Some pitched in with the yard work, such as weeding in the flower beds and cleaning out an overgrown area by a building. Others visited with some of the Nursing Home residents and learned many facts about their lives as good listeners, while some took residents for wheel chair rides in the beautiful sunshine of the day. Another group went around the Home to sing to the bedridden patients who could not get out, and was happy to learn their efforts were appreciated, especially when one of the patients made a special request for them to sing, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” A final group helped in the dining room, where a number of patients were engrossed in their weekly bingo game. The singers also made the dining group their last stop, involving the players in some of the songs, and saw that they had really enjoyed participating. The new endeavor was done in cooperation with the national “Joining Hands to Touch Lives” project sponsored by the National Fraternal Congress of America. The overall reaction of the youth was very positive, agreeing that it was a rewarding experience for them. Their comments were most favorable in their interaction with the elderly residents of the Bethlen Home. They were happy they could brighten the day for those residents who do not get visitors on a regular basis, and their opportunity to meet these special individuals. The campers also had an opportunity to learn how to get along with visitors from another country, as seven young people from Hungary attended for the week. Several Pastors translated for them, so they could understand the daily presentations and then discuss them in their own language where the words come easier. The campers readily took them under wing and showed them the uniquely American way of doing things. Generous donations to underwrite camp costs to make it available to more youths from the churches were made again by the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America and the William Penn Association. The Bethlen Home and staff provided their usual abundance of food at the picnic for always hungry campers, as well as guidance on the service projects. Directors of the 2000 Camp were Priscilla Hunyady and the Rev. Zoltán S. Sutto.
