CALVIN SYNOD HERALD ■ 2 -REFOMÁTÜSOK LAPJA Bishop's New Year's Greeting At the dawn of this New Year, I greet you all, members of our Calvin Synod and readers of these lines and I ask for the blessings of the Lord on us all for a very happy New Year. Our Heavenly Father, out of His grace, has kept and blessed us. He was with us and we knowthat He will remain with us in this New Year. It is not enough to take it for granted that our Heavenly Father will be with us; we have to do our part also! And just what is our agenda for the New Year? First, as we are Reformed Christians, we must keep our faith in the Father. Through our living faith, we must be in contact with our Father. Without faith, we may exist for a while, but we want to live! Through our religious education, we have learned that we have to be directly connected with God. We learned to recognize Him and we follow Him. Our Lord Jesus Christ promised that He would be with us through His Holy Spirit for all time. He is at our side; just call on Him and you will feel that you have not prayed in vain. He is a very present help. Be faithful to your church and your congregation. We may notfeel the value of many things until we have lost it. We may even be that way with our church. When we are far from our church, we I IN THIS ISSUEl ENGLISH SECTION Frontispiece - VanGogh: "The Road Menders "..1 Bishop's New Year's Greeting...............................2 Calvin Synod News........„................... ...3 Szedenits; "The Magyar Lord's Prayer .....4 Csiha: "The Light Through the Bars”—..........J Pail Gy: "Geneva Reformation ".............„..........6 Dr. Joseph Piri -1914-1995......„...................„......7 Hungary, History <6 Hope.....................................8 MAGYAR RÉSZ Új világtalálkozó .......„................_........„...........9 Püspök: Újévi köszöntő.........................„.............10 Kossuth Emlékév...-.......-................................„11 Szedenits I.: Magyar Miatyánk............................12 Dr. Vitéz F.: "Rege egy aranyhajú lányról'__13 Új egyházi vezetőség a magyar ref. egyházban.. 14 Kettős temetés Karácsony időszakban»..........„IS Hirdetések..........................................................16 feel the need for it. When our forefathers came to this land, they missed their church and organized about two hundred churches in different places. We are not perfect, but we strive to do better day by day. Your church is your spiritual home. We must not forsake our church. This is our home on earth. Be faithful to our Calvin Synod. This Synod has been serving you for more than half a century. Here we have our being, here we live and move. We must cherish and support this circle of ours and we must stay joined as one. Be faithfulto your American Hungarian roots. You remember your Sunday School days, Saturday School, choir, and youth groups. You remember the men's organizations and women's groups. Your support in these organizations is needed, the foundation has been laid, we must continue building higher and higher. Do you know that the number of American Hungarian descendants is about a million and three quarters? How strong we would be if we would stick together... The number of Hungarians all overthe world is about sixteen million, but only ten million live in the present day Hungary. Remember your roots, your background and the history of your forefathers. Be and remain a devout Christian. In your prayers, call upon the Heavenly Father. The line to Him is open day and night and He is ready and willing to help you. Pray for yourself, your loved ones, your church, your land, your people andforall mankind. Pray and knowthat you are a child of God. Know that your New Year will be a blessed one, notjust here, but for all eternity. Do not forget that this New Year is a new possibility and it is given to you by our Heavenly Father. A very blessed and happy New Year to all.
