REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 7 Official Communications “SHARE THE GIFT” is the theme of the Christian Enlistment efforts in many congregations during these days. We can extend it for the two months of November, December, too, as the meaning of Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas is also “Share the Gift.” The Gift is God’s love in Christ. This is the gift which we Christians are called upon to share! By our words and by our deeds we can point beyond ourselves to the Source of Love and Life... So, “Share the Gift” as an individual member of the church by your support of your church’s ministries by sharing your time and effort and money. And “Share the Gift” as a congregation by your outreach and participation in OUR mission... XXXK CONCERN FOR HUMAN RIGHTS Last summer, the Eleventh General Synod affirmed its concern for human rights in a number of ways. Concerned for the human rights of the Wilmington 10, members of the Synod marched and witnessed within view of the White House. Noting that their concern was based on theological affirmation of Jesus, who was “totally for others,” and whose “death was no accident,” and who was “God’s supreme demonstration of what it means to be human,” the delegates called attention to three nations where human rights have been seriously infringed: RUMANIA, South Korea, and the Philippines. The Synod asked the World Council of Churches to continue to monitor violations of freedom of religious and cultural minorities in RUMANIA, called on the United States to terminate trade agreements if necessary to influence such policy, expressed continued oneness with Christian leaders in South Korea who have been persecuted by their own government, and urged withdrawal of all economic, military, and other assistance to the Philippines because of suppression of human rights there. The Synod asked for a Human Rights Pronouncement to be prepared for presentation to the 12th General Synod in two years. The Office for Church in Society will appoint an advisory commission on human rights to assist in this important area of concern. As we note Human Rights Day on December 10th, an annual observance by many nations commemorating the United Nations’ sponsored Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), let us implement our own General Synod’s call to action on these issues of human rights in every way that we can. THESE GIFTS and other contributions for Hungarian Diaspora Work will be credited as OCWM basic support if we send them through denominational channels as agreed on July 20. THE MINISTERS’ SALARY was studied again by the Pension Boards. It revealed that the average salary of 4,006 UCC ministers is $13,522 in 1977. That includes cash salary plus 30% parsonage allowance, but not car allowance or other benefits. The sad part of it is that Calvin Synod is next to the last Puerto Rico with $10,957... Last year, Dr. Butosi prepared guidelines for pastoral compensation in our Synod. Copies are still available. But what we really need is understanding elders who fight and sacrifice for fair compensation of pastors! “THE FUTURE OF LIGONIER” was the topic of discussion in the Ligonier conferences early in September as the Children’s Home was closed, the By-Laws amnded to have only one administrator, and Superintendent L. Nagy announced his retirement as of Feb. 1, 1978. Since then the Conference Council on Sept. 28-29 and a representative consultation on Oct. 10 struggled with the question: “What should be the future of the Children’s Home building?” Several ideas have been suggested, but no decision have been reached. Any involvement of Calvin Synod will be determined at our Annual Meeting. “New occasions teach new duties” — pray and help to meet the challenge! THE REV. ELIZABETH D. NITSCH, after meeting all requirements, was ordained by our Synod to the Christian ministry on Sept. 5, 1977 in the Bethlen Chapel, Ligonier, Pa. May God bless her ministry! THE CONFERENCE COUNCIL met on Sept. 28-29 in Cleveland, Ohio, and among many other pertinent issues, set the date of the NEXT ANNUAL MEETING which will be: APRIL 17-20, 1978 in Ligonier, Pa. Mark it! THE 1978 YOUTH CONFERENCE will be planned by Eastern Classis, meeting on November 25, 1977 at 1 p.m. in
