NEWS ITEMS CORRECTION ON FLOOD DAMAGE In the Sept. 1 issue of KYP, an article on the Johnstown flood prematurely stated that no damage had been done to UCC churches, and that no lives were lost. Two churches of the Calvin Synod, one in Johnstown and the Hungarian UCC, Vintondale, both sustained flood damage. The parsonage and sanctuary in both locations were flooded. It required three days work to carry buckets of mud from the Johnstown basement, according to John Butosi, bishop of the Calvin Synod. He also stated that one woman from the Johnstown church was lost in the flood waters. Her body was recovered ten days after the flood 12 miles upstream. Rev. Arthur E. Antal of the Calvin Synod is a member of the Interfaith Relief Task Force in Johnstown. KYP regrets the omission. FALL WORKERS’ CONFERENCE The Workers’ Conference of Eastern Classis was called by the Rev. Zoltán Szabó, Dean of Eastern Classis and hosted by the Hungarian Church of Passaic, N.J. on Sunday, October 16. The theme of the Conference was the Sunday School and Youth work. First, various Sunday School materials were presented and discussed including a preview by Dr. John Butosi, Bishop, of the four type of approaches of the future UCC material. He also presented a film on teaching methods in Sunday School adjusted to various age levels. The workshop next had the various Sunday School grades’ teachers in their own groups discussing: curriculum, solving problems, and helpful experiences. At the plenary session their findings were reported and discussed. The desire was expresed to ask the Synod to work out for the churches a Sunday School curriculum which shall include our Hungarian Reformed heritage. Rev. Zoltán Szabó HUNGARIAN CHURCH PAPER ATTACKS NEUTRON BOMB Deep disquiet at the development of the neutron bomb by the USA has been voiced by the editor of “Reformátusok Lapja,” the weekly publication of the Reformed Church in Hungary. In a recent editorial, he deplores the fact that after a period of agreements following the cold war, and particularly after the Helsinki Agreement — “when it looked as if sensible and humane thinking throughout the world had become attuned to each other ’ — humanity is now confronted with a weapon which “only” destroys people but leaves buildings intact. The editor points out that although World War II left billions’ worth of material damage, “it was the loss of humane life rather than that of property over which the involved nations wept... Now we have a bomb that can create a world without people.” “The USA will probably increase the number of neutron bombs and thereby force the other nations to yet more unbearable expenditure on new weapons,” according to the article, which concludes with a plea for disarmament: “The survival and advance of humanity are in no way ensured by new weapons; only by being set free from them... Our deepest desire is for the peaceful safeguarding of people’s lives and of all that they have created. When God created the world, He saw that it was good. Whoever raises weapons against human beings made in the image of God is evil, he will destroy the very order of creation.” RPS, Oct ’77
