REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 7 BETHLEN GÁBOR HOME GENEVA Through their existing institutions, in America, as well as in Europe, the Hungarian immigrants embody their desire to keep their spiritual and cultural heritage alive. Some of these organizations were created as a result of the Catholic initiative, others were bom from the Protestant initiative. All have one common objective, that of perpetuating the specific Hungarian culture. By encouraging local and individual peculiarities, any government greatly facilitates the understanding of minorities and strengthenings of human bonds. The Swiss democracy is one of the best examples of this principle’s application. The Protestants of western Switzerland were thus inspired to conceive the idea of the “Bethlen Gábor” Home to be built on the shores of Lake Geneva. Nearly sFr. 100,000 have already been collected. This result not only justifies the idea but demands that the project be accomplished. To transform this idea into reality, five times that initial amount is needed. Will you help us? Our objectives are to have a home for — cultural activities (religious services, seminars, lectures, language courses etc.) — festivities — children’s vacation camps — a library — a meeting and resting place, etc. Président: Dr. J. Goebel, an honorary member of the UCBWM, died October 22, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 89. Dr. Goebel was instrumental in the union of the Evangelical Synod of North America and the Reformed Church in the U.S. to form the Evangelical and Reformed Church. He was also involved in the formation of the U.C.C. Dr. Goebel was president of the E & R Church from 1938-1953, and during that time he took part in the organizational meetings of the National Council of Church and the World Council of Churches. THE MAN JESUS Let us remember the man, Jesus. He walked the ways men walk today, working at common tasks, talking with neighbors, laughing with children, watching the flight of birds, thinking about life and dreaming beyond his daily tasks. He thought of the races of mankind and dreamed of a God whose love contained all the nations of the world, but when he spoke of this the people of his home town almost lynched him. He thought that people and their needs were more important than the sabbath rules. But when he helped a blind man or fed his disciples on the sabbath, the religious leaders were enraged. Let us remember Jesus, the Son. He walked the ways men walk today, glorifying the common tasks, transforming strangers into neighbors, blessing children, teaching and healing wherever he went. The blind saw and the lame walked. The captive was set free and the lonely learned to love. The poor at last received good news, and the sinful were forgiven. He defied the corrupt leaders of his day, and both state and temple replied by nailing him to a cross. He died a painful death while asking God’s blessing on his executioners. And that cross became a redeeming symbol in the history of mankind. REMEMBER JESUS, THE SON, THE MAN Hi-Lite * The Church is a place where Prayer is said. It is a house which Christ by His Sacramental Presence makes a Home with Homeliness and Courtesy. * It is a source of amazement to me that our bodies expend a lot of energy in one day. In a twenty-four hour period: One’s heart beats 103,689 times One’s blood travels 168,000 miles One’s breathes 23,240 times One consumes 3 1/2 pounds of food At night we turn in our sleep 25 to 35 times One speaks on the average 4,800 words One exercises 7,000,000 brain cells Isn’t it strange that many people seem to think that the real purpose of all of this is to breath in oxygen and expel carbon monoxide?
