BUDAPEST ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL REVIEW PUBLISHED BY THE CITY OF BUDAPEST THE THERMAL WATERS OF BUDAPEST SPA The therapeutic value of the thermal waters that gush to the surface in Buda and its surroundings was known many centuries ago and, very probably one of the factors which led to the selection of Buda as a capital. Buda, as a spa, was a flourishing watering-place as far back as the Roman era, Aquincum being one of the favorous resorts of the Emperor Hadrian and his soldiers. The ruins of the Roman baths of that time are still to be seen. King Matthias Corvinus, the great Hungarian ruler of the Renaissance created magnificent bath-establishments in the close proximity of his palace. During the Turkish occupation, which lasted for a hundred and fifty years, the springs came to their own and many baths were built several of which are still in use. The thermal baths of Buda retained their importance as therapeutic centers after the liberation of the country from Turkish occupation. Foreign travellers who visited Buda at the time all refer to the importance of the thermal baths. With a history such as this it is natural that the thermal springs and hydropathic establishments of Buda should have acquired high international fame during the past decades. Budapest is indeed a Spa in the sense that treatment in its many thermal springs ensure health, its amenities as a capital afford practically unrestricted possibilities for recreation and the waters are ideal for drinking cures. In all there are no less than one hundred and seventeen thermal RESTA VRANT BALÁZS itt the look-out tower on top of John's hill springs scattered throughout the capital. Budapest, therefore, enjoys advantages unparalelled by any other town in the world. The temperature of the thermal waters of Budapest varies between 30 and 80 centigrade ; the waters are rich in sulphur, calcium, manesium sulphate and radioactive substances. The healing effect of the mud baths of the thermal baths of Buda is particularly striking. All diseases of the rheumatic group, myalgia, fibrositis, arthritis, other articular complaints, muscular atrophy, sciatica, other neuralgia, gout, circulatory disorders etc., are successfully cured in the thermal waters and mud baths of Budapest Spa. Particularly good results have also been achieved in the after —- treatment of occupational injuries, fractures, luxations, postoperative neuralgia, restrictions of movement, contractures, paralysis and even of infantile paralysis. Certain springs rich in radio-active material are used successfully against primature senility, exhaustion and high blood pressure. The principal bath-establishments fed by the thermal springs of Budapest Spa are : the Emperor Bath, the Rudas Hydropathic Establishment, the Széchenyi Bath, the St. Gellért Hotel and Hydropathic Establishment and the various baths and swimming pools on the St. Margaret Island. The most important aperient waters are drawn from the János Hunyadi, Apenta and Francis Joseph springs. They are indicated not only in the case of simple and chronic constipation but also in cases of indigestion, urticaria, jaundice, gall-stones, toxis state, haemorrhoids, affections of the prostate, intestinal and metabolic disorders, complaints of the liver, gout and diabetes. They are also suitable for the absorption of pleural residues and for reducing cures.
