Oláh Chief Elder: Andrew Csabai, Jr. Elders: Ferenc Csabai, Sr., Steve Lance, Jolán Smetana, Ilona Zajos, Treasurer: Ferenc Csabai, Jr. Secretary: Mrs. Judit Szabó, Organists: Ms. Mimi Veres - Taylor and Mrs. Gabriella Ilkey. At the turn of the 20th Century the Wharton area was dominated by four industries: iron mining, a steel mill, four railroads, and the Morris Canal. The Hungarians who emigrated to the area sparked the founding of the Hungarian Presbyterian Church in 1904. Because of the large number of Hungarians employed at the Wharton Steel Company, its President, Joseph Wharton, donated the property on which the Church is built. The Church used the Methodist Church, the Luxemburg Presbyterian Church, and rented facilities until, with the assistance of the Presbyterian Church Mission Board, the sanctuary was completed in September, 1906. When the Church door first opened, about 40 worshippers climbed the “steep Steps” leading to their Robert Street building, with its impressive “steeple reaching for the sky”. v. Károly G. Oláh, Lay Minister 230
