In memoriam

IN MEMÓRIÁM MRS. ARTHUR A. LUDWIG - ELVIRA PIROSKA June 15, 1909 - September 23, 2001 Elvira Piroska (Konrad) Ludwig was called home by her Lord on Sunday, September 23,2001. Piroska was the widow of Rev. Dr. Arthur Aurel Ludwig who served our Indiana Harbor congregation from April 1,1958 until his death on February 24,1981. Piroska was bom in Tokod (county of Komárom), Hungary. While still an infant, her family moved to Handlova (county of Nyitra) Hungary, where she became a citizen of Czechoslovakia in 1921, following the partition of Hungary. She received a classical university education, and was a teacher of French. She married Arthur Aurel Ludwig in 1939 in Érsekújvár (Nővé Zamky) in the Evangelical Church. They made their home in Pozsony (Bratisláva), where Arthur’s family was engaged in the import-export wine business, and he served as the corporate attorney. As Hungarian nationals in the Slovak portion of dismembered Hungary, they were very active in furthering the continuation of Hungarian life and culture in their community, being involved in the establishment of Hungarian language schools. Their oldest three children, Piroska, Aurel and Zora Valeria, were bom in Pozsony, and with the imminent arrival of the Soviet forces in 1945, they emigrated to Austria, where their two youngest children, Koloman Karl and Irene were bom. Within Austria they were forced to relocate as their residence fell within the Soviet sector upon partition of Austria. While in Austria, they were involved in Hungarian émigré and cultural activities. The family emigrated to the United States in 1950. Living first on a farm near Celina, Ohio, the family moved to Coldwater, Ohio, where Piroska worked in local agricultural work while her husband worked at a farm implement factory. They relocated to Dayton, Ohio, where they affiliated with our Dayton congregation and the local Hungarian community. Piroska worked at various jobs, eventually working as a children’s librarian, 231
