REPORT OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CONGREGATION WITH HUNGARIAN BACKGROUND Reverend Alexander Jalso, the pastor for many years, retired a few years ago, and the new pastor Rev. Aleda Arnold Menchyk was appointed as an interim in February 1998. By September 1998, the congregation requested that they be permitted to obtain pastoral services from a stated supply rather than a called and installed pastor and Rev. Menchyk was subsequently appointed as stated supply in September 1999. The congregation numbers 113, an increase of 12 people in 1999. We have a lively Sunday School with 20-25 children each Sunday. The children sing in worship 6-8 times a year and lead the entire service once a year, usually the Sunday before Thanksgiving. We have joined with 2 neighboring Presbyterian Churches the past 2 years for Vacation Bible School during the Summer. The choir is 6-10 women, who sing each Sunday, as well as lead the entire service for our Christmas Cantata. These women also assist as liturgists on Christmas Eve and on Maundy Thursday. The Ladies Aid Society remains active and sponsors the Annual Christmas Bazaar the first Sunday in November. They also have a booth at the National Pike Days celebrations and make home-made noodles as a fund-raising project. This year they are again having a Hungarian cookbook published. Since February 1998 we have had 4 weddings, 10 baptisms. Although Rev. Menchyk has done funerals for 6 individuals, only 1 was an active member of the congregation. We celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion - the first Sunday of Advent, Christmas Eve, the first Sunday of Lent, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday, Pentecost, once in the summer, and on World-wide Communion Sunday. We participate in the Brownsville Area Ministerial Association and join with them for Good Friday Services, various Ecumenical events throughout the years and various local mission projects. The congregation also contributes to the Brownsville Soup Kitchen and provides Christmas gifts for some of the patients at Mayview State Hospital in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, as well as participates in several denominational offerings. Rev. Aleda Arnold Menchyk, intermin pastor 210
