HUNGARIAN REFORMED WITNESS IN PHILADELPHIA A Ministry of Hungarians in Greater Philadelphia Reformed Worship services are held every Sunday in Hungarian at 12:30 p.m. (September-May) or 11:30 a.m. (June-August) at Glading Memorial Presbyterian Church, Loretto & Cheltenham Avenues, Philadelphia, Oxford Circle on Roosevelt Boulevard. Every branch of the universal Christian Church is represented in The Hungarian Fellowship, united in their praise of God in the Hungarian language. Used in worship is the 1947 hymnal of the American Hungarian Reformed Ministerial Association. Communion is frequent and social times are enjoyed by the group several times a year. Preaching and pastoral care are provided by the Rev. Zoltán Szabó. He is on the staff of Glading Church, but his ministry is also a concern of the Presbytery of Philadelphia of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). English-speaking members of The Hungarian Fellowship become members of Glading Church, thereby supporting not only its facilities but its Hungarian pastor. They receive the church newsletter, have their concerns reported in it, and feel a part of the total congregation on specific joint occasions. History of the Reformed Witness in Philadelphia In 1902 the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. arranged for the Rev. Stephen Virág, pastor of the Magyar Church in Trenton, New Jersey, to conduct worship occasionally for Hungarian immigrants in Philadelphia. He organized the Magyar Calvinistic Sick Benefit Society, which along with an existing Magyar Cultural Society embraced those interested in establishing a Magyar congregation. Efforts accelerated in the fall of 1903, and on January 31, 1904, the First Magyar Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia was organized with 39 members. Sunday worship was held in the Holland Memorial Chapel, and weekday worship in the American Presbyterian Church. The new congregation was received into Philadelphia Presbytery on June 27, 1908. 211
