CLEVELAND, OH Pastor: Stephen T. Szilágyi Pastor Emeritus: Dr. Stephen Szabó Chief Elder: Julie Reitz. Elder: Dr. Dezső Ladányi. The year 1987 brought many happy and varied events at the First Hungarian Reformed Church. Every day we were provided the opportunity to praise the Lord. Our Sunday School children learned ,,Ez a nap az, amelyet az Ür rendelt; Örvendezzünk és vigadjunk ezen”, put to music in a form of a round, as a special gift to our beloved Pastor Emeritus Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Szabó as we celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination on March 29. It was a wonderful well attended festive day; as a result, many 2nd and 3rd generation Hungarians are now singing this happy psalm. Our Sunday School, though small in number, is filled with enthusiasm and vigor. The superintendent John Csuti took off his ,,hat”, gave it to his wife Barbara and accepted the position of Treasurer. Charles Hartman our ,,főgondnok” helped the congregation over crucial times, times of much stress and strife. On Oct. 18, 1987, another milestone was reached in our history, Mrs. Michael (Julia Szönyi) Reitz was elected „főgondnok”. Julie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Szonyi. Mr. Szőnyi rises very early, very frequently to supervise the donut (fánk) makers. Julie’s sister Mrs. Phillip (Louise) Luschek was re-elected secretary of the Consistory. An unofficial, active group, (somewhat chubby) was formed this year under the leadership of Mrs. Dezső (Alice) Ladányi. Appropriately named, The Dine Around Group visits a local restaurant each month. In June, they had a Tailgate Party in the Church parking lot, after which a tour of the Abbey of the Benedictine Order was taken. Alice’s husband, Dr. Dezső Ladányi, because of his expert, intelligent commentary, was elected „gondnok”. 134
