Bethlen Almanac
32 BETHLEN ALMANAC Both Throop and Kingston have become single-language churches, losing their bilingual identity. In an effort to better serve their constituency, they changed their names, the former becoming Logan Presbyterian Church and the latter Second Presbyterian Church. Two of our churches have no Sunday school, and two have not contributed to the Benevolence causes of our denomination. Besides Throop and Kingston, the following churches have also changed their names: Aurora to Second Presbyterian, South Bend to Memorial Presbyterian, Newark to Bethlen Presbyterian, New Brunswick to Bayard Street Presbyterian and Sharon to Bethlehem Presbyterian. Several other churches are in the process of doing so. I am happy to report that most of our churches are live, progressive churches. Where the minister is proficient in both languages and where the members contribute generously to the support of the church, there is visible growth. The membership roll in a goodly number of our churches is continuously increasing. Some of our Bible schools are showing marked and definite improvement, which is also an encouraging sign. New churches and additions are being built, wherever the need is pressing. In order to adopt effective and expanding programs for all three generations we’re serving in these crucial times, we first need willing, enthusiastic and devoted volunteers in all fields of activity; second, we need more and more loyal, rank-and-file members who in their devotion are able to make sacrifices the kind Abel made in the distant long ago and who are sincerely willing to tithe. We pray that the number of these full-grown Christians conscious of their responsibilities, will continue to grow! FRANCIS R.
