Bethlen Naptár, 1953 (Ligonier)

Life in our Bethlen Home

BETHLEN NAPTÁR 235 rects the farming. 120 acres of land are under actual cultivation, the remainder is pasture land and a large portion includes the coal mine. Our main crops include oats, barley, wheat, silo, hay, sweet corn, as well as garden vegetables. The grain is used as feed for our stock. During the past four years it cost $21,335.40 to run our farm, from which we procured a great portion of our food, while at the same time we realized $14,397.37 from the sale of farm products which were in excess of our needs. It is our goal to make our farm self-sustaining eventually. Our coal mine has been under lease for the past four years. At first, the coal was shaft-mined, but for the past few years strip-mining has been carried on by our lessees. Our institution has realized $5,533.48 in royalties during the past four years from coal mined on Bethlen Home property. Through this report we hope that you of our Second Generation, who are members of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America and our supporting churches, fully realize the great heritage which will soon be entirely yours. You can be justly proud of this heritage, but you must accept, also, the responsibilities that go with its support and its further development. We hope to gain more and more supporters from among our Second Generation, who themselves might some day turn to the Bethlen Home for help. The following is a brief financial picture which will show that an institution such as ours requires not only good supervision and management, but money as well, in order that our charitable work might be carried on successfully for the glory of God and the benefit of our faith and race.
