Bethlen Naptár, 1950 (Ligonier)

To our second generation. Superindent's semi-annual report

236 I5ETHLEN NAPTAR was completed by the end of June so that the dedication took place on the Fourth of July. The cost of this work was about $1300. In the old folks’ home, the lower floor and the dining room were repainted, new light fixtures installed, the laundry room renovated and a new laundry unit installed. The same type of laundry machine was placed in the children’s home. These expenses totalled about $1800. We invested $400.00 in new mattresses for the old folks. In the children’s home, the first floor was newly painted and chairs were purchased for use in the board room at a total expenditure of $350.00. A bedroom and bath were added to the old folks’ home at an expense of $900.00. At a cost of $186.00 a new refrigerator was installed in the farm kitchen. The following renovations and purchases were made on the farm, thereby assuring us of more efficient work: The barn, stable and silo were repaired and new cattle stalls were erected at a cost of $600.00. A combine was purchased for the sum of $1700.00. Our harvesting and threshing were done with this equipment and much time and labor were saved. We harvested 760 bushels of barley, 565 bushels of wheat, 435 bushels of oats and about 60 tons of hay and clover. We preserved 2000 quarts of beans, peas, corn, beets and pickles. After our farm foreman completed our own harvesting and threshing, he worked for neighbors, earning $400.00 in all, which amount we used as part payment on our combine. In a few years the combine shall have paid for itself. Our stock has been better and larger in number than ever before. The following were the outstanding events that took place at the Bethlen Home during the last six months: In February the staff of the County Welfare Board paid us a visit and arranged for the pensions of twelve of our old guests. They complimented the Bethlen Home on the fine work done among young and old alike. During the same month, Mr Emery of Latrobe, chalk-talk artist, gave the children and the old folks a very interestinng and spiritually uplifting demonstration of his art. During February, March and April, 52 parcels of thread, floss and clothing were shipped to DP’s in Germany and Austria, and to old folks’ and children’s homes in Hungary. On Good Friday the superintendent took part in the union services held at the Methodist Church of Ligonier, while his wife led the Women’s Choral Group in sacred selections. In April, the superintendent attended the district conference of the Hungarian Reformed Federation and in March, the conference of the Supreme Council. The Magyar Synod held its annual synodical meeting
