It’s on my conscience, I must confess to someone; I’m going mad, I’m going slowly but surely mad. Around me are the bare walls, they are pressing, fold­ing me in. I shall kill myself when I finish this; but I must tell — I must! Last year, just at this time, I killed my wife. I had to kill her, I had no other choice. Many, many times I thought that they were coming for me, to take me, to hang me, but now — I am tired, I shall tell all. It was when I was out of work, and Sue and I had to beg. Beg! Do you know what that means to me? All my pride rebelled, but I couldn’t find a job. It was pretty cold then, the last flurries of winter . . . The cruel, disheartening voic­es of the people, as they slam­med their doors in my face! The children’s, “Sorry, mother isn’t home.” Damn them, what did they know of my poverty, they had a home, they didn’t care. It was dark, and I waited on the corner in the light of a street lamp. Finally I saw her coming. She dragged her feet, her steps lagged, her cumber­some body slow progress toward me. It was then that I resolv­ed to kill her. My baby, my child, would not be bom in the street. I always carried that phial of poison with me: al­ways waiting for the worst, I kept it, thinking that it would be our last resort. “Lew,” she said, “how much did you get?” Angrily I looked at her. “Mother isn’t home,” I fairly shouted, quoting the usual replies. “I got two cents,” she falt­ered. “Two cents” — I scornfully looked at them, as she stretch­ed her hand forward. Snatch­ing them from her, I dashed them to the ground. She looked frightened then, and I was sorry as I heard her exclaim, and reluctantly stoop­ed to pick them up. Sue, this can’t go on,” I breathlessly exclaimed. “We have no home, no cloth­es, no money, and our baby coming. I won’t have it born on the street, not if I have to kill you, I won’t.” “Lew!” “O Sue,” I sobbed, and fell silent. Across the way I saw a cat lazily strolling along the street, paying no attention to us; un­concernedly waving its tail — disappearing into the darkness. Hearing a movement beside me, I glanced hastily up. Sue was trying to get away. With a muffled scream she started to run. Anger seized me — I dashed after her. With a cry of rage, I sprang, caught her by the hair, stopping her short. Before I realized it, I had done it; some of it dribbling from her chin, and she laying there in the street, unconscious. I was mad I tell you, -I just stood and stared. Then I heard a noise, someone was coming, and close too, I must beat it, I must get away. I started to run, I don’t know where I ran, I heard a whistle blowing, shrill and accusing it sounded. I got away, but not from her! Sometimes when it’s cold and I awaken, I can see her glassy eyes. She tells me to come to her. And I tremble and whimper like a dog. But I’m tired now, awfully tired . . . NOTE: I accidentally stumbled across this confession in one of the recent files of the court of Mor­als. It seems that at a call for a poison gas case, in which it is claimed that the victim was demented, this confession was scrawled on a shopping bag. He left not a scrap of identific­ation, and in spite of all in­quiry; where he came from, who his wife was, is still not known. “BERT LESTER,” Phila., Pa COMMENT: Welcome to the column, Bert!
