HEAVEN?.

Such weather! Hot? Oh, yes, simply suffocating.

James Morris wiped his face, which was red from the heat and the sun had seen to it that all the freckles on his small upturned nose came out for airing. With a drenched, soiled handkerchief. He was weak and exhausted as he pushed and pulled the grassmo- wer much too large and heavy for his young twelve years.

— Damn it, this here is the third one this morning. He muttered as he gazed painfully in his palms, both filled with blisters.

— Hell — he exclaimed bitterly, rather loud for one talking to himself. Why must 1 do this?---- Come, Come, wath’s the

idea? — some one asked behind him.

Jim turned crimson, as he answered weakly in his émbarras- nient that nothing was wrong, w-ithout looking up at the owner of the voice.

— Nothing, huh? — his visitor asked. By the way do you ever expect to get to heaven by swearing? Wy boy, you ought to be glad you are able to Work, a healthy boy like you should be proud to earn his own bread.

Jim wished his visitor would leave; he hated question boxes. To bring the conversation to a close, Jim replied rather sarcastically: Did you come here purposely to talk to me? If so, 1 am busy and can’t be bothered.

— Sorry to interrupt you buddy — the visitor ansvered quickly as he noticed Jim reaching for the grassmoWer.

— But believe me there is one more naughty boy, who in later years will be knocking on the door downstairs, for you will never get to heaven. Why you don't even appreciate Gods’ gift of health.

— Don’t preach — yelled Jim, the blood in his veins almost bursting from anger.

— What’s the matter with ya? What hospital did ya drop from? You don’t seem too sick to push this here grassmower.

— That’s all right big boy. I am independent. But remember you will never go to heaven if you keep this up.

— Heaven! Heaven? — Jim shouted at him. Who wants to go to heaven?

This was too sudden; the visitor was speechless, but only for a moment.

— Now don t get excited — he said Calmly, — You really don’t mean that.

For the first time since his arrival, Jim glanced from the corner of his eye at him. He saw an eyeful.

A well dressed boy of fifteen or sixteen years of age stood there eyeing him suspiciously with a big ice cream cone in his hand, keeping cool too cool to suit Jim!

— I mean it — Jim flung back at him, his eyes feasting themselves on the icecream. What ya or anybody else wanna go to heaven fer?

— Boy, boy, there is a lot of things you don’t know except push that grassmower. Why when you go to heaven you live over again, you have all the necessities of life, luxuries, food, clothing, good times and (catching Jim’s eye on his ice cream) plenty of this.

At this Jim eyes widened in excitement as he thought that someday his boyish desires would be realized. Poor Jim fell for it, and fell for it hard, but only foT a second.

— And will ya go to heaven too? — queried Jim.

— Who? Me? — asked the visitor triumphantly. Why, of course I will.

— But. but — Jim stamr.vire 1 That ain t fair. What ya wanna go to heaven fer?

— Don’ t be ignorant — the visitor answered. Why the same- reason you do.

— Oh, ya do, do ya? -— Jim asked as his face lit up with a broad smile. Now aint that grand — Jim said mockingly.

The visitor sensing trouble in the air, quickly cut the conversa- J tion short.

— Well it’s near lunch time I J better be going — he said.

— But aint ya gonna tell me.: more of heaven — Jim grinned.

— I said all there is to say ---the visitor replied — Good by.

Before Jim could answer he turned and hurried down the street, his hands in his pakets, his head downcast, his eyes faste- < ned on his shoes and with a big “Failure” engraved on his face, Jim’s visitor disappeared as suddenly as he appeared.

— Wanting to go to heaven to have a nice time, lots of clothes and eats. They aint taking chan-, . ces’tff being stopped by St. Peter so they have a good time while their feet are on this good old soil in case all don’t turn out as they figure. They don’t w;ant much? Oh no, only give it to them. — Jim repeated over and over again.

Lunch was forgotten, his wearK ness was forgotten. Everything was forgotten except his unexpected, caller and that beautiful strange land where he would go if he wpuld be a .good boy. . .heaven!

Megindult a tőkés osztály offenzivája Magyarországon is aXmunkások ellen

Millions of people believe in a heaven and hell which the good will go to heaven and then have all their hearts desire, while those that are bad shall go to hell in wich they will suffer for their wickedness. However, there is no evidence to substantiate the

A baranyamegyei szászvári kőszénbánya igazgatósága az elmúlt hét végén tudomására adta a munkásoknak, hogy 60 bányászt elbocsátanak, mert széntulterme- lés van.

A többieket, számszerint 250 bányászt pedig arról értesítette, hogy munkabérüket 1 0 százalékkal leszállítja.

Egyben figyelmeztette az igazgatóság a bányászokat, hogy ezen intézkedésbe nyugodjanak bele, mert másképp az üzemet nem bírják fenntartani. Hogy az igazgatók és egyébb "produktiv” emberek fizetését is leszállították volna 1 0 százalékkal, arról persze nincs szó.

A bányászok bére havonta 90 és 100 pengő volt. Egyelőre a hangulat feszült és nagyban fo- gadkoznak ,hogy a bérletörés esetén nem dolgoznak. De mi, akik világosan látjuk a helyzetet, jól tudjuk, hogy a bányamunkásszakszervezet, majd még az esetben, ha netán sztrájk törne ki, "áthidalja" az ellentéteket. Pilisvörös- vár, Salgótarján, Pécs, bányászainak elárult sztrájkja ezt igazolja.

De baj van újból Pécsett is. A pécsvidéki kőszénbányába hosz- szabb idő óta csupán heti 5 napon át dolgoznak. Az igazgatóság most az 5 napos munkahetet 3—4 napra redukálja. (És mondja valaki, hogy itt nem valósul meg a .rövidebb munkaidő.) Ez gyakorlatban azt jelenti, hogy a bér is jóval alatta marad a 80—1 10

pengő közt ingadozónak, természetes, ennyi pénz éhenhaláshoz sok, a megélhetéshez viszont kevés, tehát csak vegetálni lehet belőle. A pécsi bányásztok a pénzügyminiszterhez fordultak segítségért.

Elmentek bepanaszolni az ördögöt a nagymamájához, tehát ezt eredményezi a szakszervezeti "nevelés”. Hogy van egy mindennél és mindenkinél hatalmasabb erő, a munkássolidaritás és helyes szervezkedés, ezt a leghatalmasabb erőt nem ismerik. Hát a szakszervezeti mozgalomban bizony nem is ismerhették meg. — Ezért nem meglepő, hogy balgaságukba a miniszteri előszobákba kilincselnek , sorsukat, ahelyett hogy maguk intéznék, erejükre, támaszkodva, másra bízzák ....

Mivel a bányászok hitüket vesztették, a szakszervezeti mozgalommal szemben indifferensek- ké váltak.

Éppen ezért meglepő, hogy most a franciaországi bányászexport anyagát, a Bányamunkások szakszervezetére bízták összeírni.

Átlag minden hónapban 60—80 bányászt szállítanak ki Franciaországba a hatósági munkaközvetítő utján. Szó se róla, ez a legköny- nyebb megoldása az itteni munka- nélküliségnek. Még hozzá szak- szervezeti falazással.

Pedig volna itt munka elég, — csak helyesen kellene szervezkedniük.

A KOMMUNARDOK GYŰLÉSE

Az Uj Előre egyik belmunka- társa kisszámú párthívei előtt szept. 27-én úgynevezett beszámolót tartott a Cleveland West- side-i Munkás Otthonban. Hogy mit mondott? — Semmi egyebet, mint azt, amit mi már oly sokszor elmondtunk a Bérmunkás hasábjain, no meg az IWW ellen is használta a szokásos frázisaikat. Elmondja, hogy főpapjaik nagyon sokat beszélnek és semmit sem mondanak, továbbá igazolta azt, hogy a Szovjet Union a kapitah ta osztálylyal testvéri barátságot kötött, rendszerét bevezette és ma ott is ugyanazt a kizsákmányolást látjuk, mint itt Amerikában. Ott semmi egyébb nincs, mint kommunista védjegy alatt meghúzódó kizsákmányoló kapitalista rendszer. Kijelentette, hogy az ő nyom dójukban is kilátásban van a bérlevágás vagy mutikásainak teljes

kicserélése, ami nem jelent egyebet, mint behozzák a szervezetlen munkásokat a helyükbe. Mint fentebb említem, nen| volna teljes a kép, ha valamit nem mondanának vagy a Bérmunkásról, vagy az IWW-t nem említenék meg. —• Befejezi ide-oda ugrándozó zavaros előadását azzal, hogy a Bérmunkás hazudik, mert az Önképző háza a duplájáért a vételárnak már el van adva.

Itt megint egy dupla forradalmárral állunk szembeh, akit nem vehetünk komolyan, mint a többiek. Ö is a főpapok borába akar lépni, de párthiveinek is csak addig beszélhet (mert munkásemberek már nem hallgatják meg őket) mig párthiveik is megsokal- ják és azok sem jelennek meg az ilyen és ehhez hasonló zagyva előadásokon.

Scientist have spanned the universe with gigantic telescopes but nowhere is there any evidence of ’’golden stairs and angels”. More- over, there is no ”UP or DAWN” in space, and clergymen who claim that heaven is ‘up’ and hell is ’down” are urged to impart their knowledge to the scientists.

Knowing nothing of heaven or

hell we must return to reality. We see from Fellow Worker Székely’s story that the rich make sure they have all the things that life is worthwhile living for, while the ignorant poor hope to get theirs in heaven.

Intelligent people will fight to get everything here wile we live and leave the “hereafter" to those who believe in it.
