ELŐSZÓ - PREFACE

Yearbook of the Municipal Ervin Szabó Library IV. (XIV.) 1949-1954. Bp. 1955. p. 108-113., József Zoltán: Programme of the bibliography of the history of Budapest. Yearbook of the Municipal Ervin Szabó Library IX. (XXI.) 1961. Bp., 1962. p. 185 — 206.) During our working we deviated partly from these ideas and this programme. Our collection covered in the first place the stock of books and manuscripts of the Budapest Collection of the Municipal Ervin Szabó Library (by them we give the shelf number too), which covers, including leaflets, pamphlets, about 100 000 entries. For the supplying of wants we took into consideration the stocks of the Széchenyi National Library and of other great Budapest libraries too. We treated also 1100 periodicals and daily papers, moreover our newspaper-cut collection. The latter contents also such foreign articles of periodicals and newspapers which would not have got into the bibliography, because the periodicals and newspapers were not treated systematically and things being like this they are not to be found in the list of periodicals. (The list of treated periodicals is identical with that of the abbreviations.) At the explication we took down the following data: in the case of books and pamphlets, leaflets the author or editor (in the case of anonymous or pseudonymous works we found out, if it was possible, the author or editor and then we took them down), the title of the work (abbreviated in particular in the case of long titles), the place of publication, the publisher or the printing house, the time of publication and in the case of one-volumed works the number of pages. Up to 1800 the imprint is given verbatim, after this date only abbreviated. As regards articles of periodicals we give after the author and title the full or the abbreviated title of the periodical (as regards abbreviations we strived after being easily understandable in order that the researcher ought not resort incessantly to the list of abbreviations), the year of publication (perhaps within a year the necessary number of volume or of issue), and the commencing and ending numbers of pages. As regards weekly papers there were indicated the year, the number of issue and the number of pages. In the case of daily papers there is given in general the date and the number of pages of the article, in that of cuts only the date. In the case of articles of newspapers and of periodicals a single entering was in general sufficient. In the case of larger monographic works and of collection-volumes we made analytical entries (with abbreviated entries

: author, title abbreviated, year of publication, number of pages and the magazin number of the book) in order to give the dates as detailed as possible. As regards the treating of works published in several languages and in several issues only of the oldest or of the best publications were made analytical entries. As regards articles without titles or in the case of analytical entries which could not be divided in chapters we gave fictitious titles in square brackets. Materials concerning identical themes were contracted with a fictional title — if by the omission of the annotation the bibliography was not made poorer — {E. g.: Medardus', Leopold's, Joseph's, John's day's fairs, street names, booksellers etc.). Where the title is not clear and demands further explanation, there are annotations. In these there are abbreviations for the sake of conciseness and to save space. (Their list is likewise added.) By older works of source value — in first line in the case of works published before 1686, partly also at works published after 1686 — we give instead of annotations original texts, if the data concerning Budapest are not too long. By the treatment of the material we made every annotation on the basis of the original work. Therefore we publish here and there only works published in translation, because we could not acquire the original. From the character of the material followed evidently the solution to consider only 1686 as a line of demarcation. Works about the former period or works covering the whole history and development of Budapest (geography, climate, natural view etc.) are to be found in the first volume of the bibliography, the further volumes content the material of the period of 1686—1950 in the following arrangement: Vol. II. Description of the city, City-planning, — Sanitary matters of Budapest — Budapest the city of Spas^ Vol. III. Economy, Vol. IV. Society, Vol. V. Politics, Administration, Vol. VI. Civilization, Vol. VII. Lists of names, registers, indexes. Within the classes contenting the material of each volume there is followed a logical or a historical order

; where a better solution was not possible, the alphabetical order was adapted. The institutions are given in the entries generally by their (present-day) names

; if the name of the institution changed on several occasions, but the institution remained the same, we indicated the former names not more than in the form of references. Where not only the name of the institution changed, but also the character, the reader can find the respective material under the former denomination. Within the single themes we used the following order: bibliographies in alphabetical order, laws and statutes in chronological order, comprehensive and general works in alphabetical order and finally the material concerning detail in alphabetical order.
