of contemporary European universities' main buildings. The accentuated central projection, the foyer behind the portico, the roofed grand courtyard opened along its axis with the grand staircase and internal courtyards placed along the transverse axis, as well as the lecture halls reaching out as corner projections are basic components of both plans. Typical of the period, elongated facades turned towards the Danube. Whilst Hauszmann used wings to create this longish riverfront facade, Czigler designed a near quadrate building with a main facade to which slightly inorganically further pavilions connect which in turn are linked via an integral system of corridors and arcades. Marked with a letter "A" the quadrate block-like main building articulated with internal courtyards occupied almost one quarter of the total area of the Campus. miniüií^ pip] III A mSaBmmmm The main facade of Czigler's main building facing the Danube featured a central projection accentuated by the imposing cupola, two wings flanking it symmetrically, and corner projections pulled in the direction of the Danube. The latterwas directlyjoined by further pavilions from the north and south (B - "Architects' pavilion", C -''Clerks Quarters”). The pavilions feature smaller cupolas than that of the Central Building. Even in Czigler's plans the Library was connected with the main building via an arcaded corridor. The quadrate ground-plan of the building is divided into two by a north-south wing which contains lecture rooms. Flanked by the roofed courtyard and the foyer from the direction of the Library, the imposing lecture hall on the main axis is especially accentuated and has a main role in the composition. The western wing ends in two lecture halls overhang like projections. Czigler designed larger playgrounds in front of the northern
